My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hoss: 10 year-old neutered male yellow Lab 80lbs

Howdy, folks, proud to meet you. As you may guess from my name, I'm a good ol' country boy, and for most of my 10 years, I've lived a country life. I've spent a lot of time on my own, but all I really wanted was a place to call home. At times I didn’t know where I was supposed to be, so sometimes I’d just mosey off, and the next thing I knew, SLAM! I’d be behind bars at the shelter. I don’t know why the family that owned me decided I wasn’t worth keeping, but after my third strike, I really was on my own.

But boy, things sure are different now. Since I’ve been at my new foster home, life has turned around. I’ve got 2 humans who shower me with love, and a new 10 yr old lab buddy named Stanley. We go out for walks, play fetch, and we even get treats! And best of all, I got a dog bed! I never knew sleeping on a soft bed could be so wonderful! Bye-bye, hard ground. These days, I wouldn’t wander off if you poked me in the eye! I feel sad that my family didn’t want me anymore, but I sure am glad the Lab Rescue folks picked me up when they did. I know good luck when I smell it! If you adopt me and give me a loving home, you wouldn’t believe how much I have to give back to you.

Foster Sumee’s comments: I was expecting Hoss to be a handful, without much training, and a strong tendency to take off without a moment’s notice. But I couldn’t have been more wrong! He is in fact the most wonderful, sweet, and gentle dog I’ve met in a very long time. And I didn’t have to do a thing except show him how much he was wanted. He’s completely housebroken, knows most commands (stay, sit, drop, lie down, come) and absolutely loves to retrieve (including bringing it back!), he walks both on and off leash (in dog-safe areas), is friendly with other dogs, and is quiet (very little barking). It’s possible he may have had some field training, as his “stay” and “fetch” are strong during play. Although he is estimated to be 10, he is as active, athletic and strong as a 6 or 7 year old, so he likes to get exercise. But he definitely is as good at napping as he is at playing. He’s such an exceptional dog, with so much heart, I desperately hope he finds a kind family he can love, and grow old with.

Hoss is located in Novato, he is very healthy, we had a senior screen done and he passed with flying colors, he has all his shots, neutered, microchipped and his heartworm negative.

(Please keep in mind we are all volunteers, most of us work full time and we all have personal lives. I do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient and I will be back in touch with you. When the dogs are in foster homes then it may take longer as we need to touch base with the fosters for updates on the dogs. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week and we do not have a facility that we keep the dogs housed in. They are scattered all over the Bay Area.)
