My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This beauty is Ruby and she is an 8mth old total doll of a dog. She is a unique mix of breeds and is a real Heinz 57 but we do know her to be part Boxer and part Rhodesian Ridgeback (no ridge) but there are other breeds in her genetic make- up as well. Some part of her breed mix is keeping her small. Ruby is a medium sized dog, weighing 40lbs and at 8mths old she is almost full grown. She may put on a few more pounds as she matures and fills out but she has reached her full height. Ruby is 18” at the shoulder, so not an overly tall dog at all. What we do know is that regardless of what breeds make up Ruby, she is 100% wonderful and is a joy to live with and to love. Ruby is an amazing dog and we are willing to bet she will be a lucky persons or family’s best dog ever!

Ruby has been bounced around to various homes in her short life so far. Her last owner abandoned her at the side of the road to fend for herself. We have no idea why anyone would get rid of this dog, or why someone would abandon her. She is a very easy dog to live with and is loving and friendly and so sweet. Ruby attracts people wherever she goes. She is a very good looking dog and very friendly, a great combination! Ruby is perfectly housetrained and crate trained and hasn’t had a single accident in her foster home. She knows many commands including “sit”, “down”, “shake a paw” and “come” and she will also come to a whistle. She is extremely intelligent and catches on to your expectations very easily. She will be a fantastic obedience dog or dog sport dog. If anyone is looking for a dog to compete in dog sports with or wants to take a dog to the competitive levels of obedience, this is your dog. Ruby is responsive, very food motivated, and has a keen desire to please. She is a breeze to train and she is so smart. She will be capable of many things so we are hoping for a home for her that will take advantage of that and will want to train her well and work with her towards a goal.

Ruby is being fostered in a home with other dogs and she loves to run around and play with them. We are hoping for a home for Ruby that has another happy, mid- sized dog that would play with her. She loves to run and wrestle with her foster siblings and she gets so much joy from playing with them. The only time we hear her bark is sometimes during play with her foster dog friends. Other than that she is pretty quiet. She is also being fostered in a home with cats and she is fine with them as well. She will try and play with them though. One of our cats obliges her and they have a great time. She would be ok in a home with a tolerant cat but will need reminders not to chase the cat. She is not being fostered in a home with kids but we do believe with her medium size and good nature she would be fine for a home with children over 8 years old. She does not show any aggression over her toys or food. She is a pup though and will need further training around children so that she doesn’t mouth them or play too rough.

Ruby travels well in the car. She doesn’t like getting in the car yet but once in settles nicely for the ride. We understand her hesitation to get in the car as she was abandoned by a trusted person who drove her to a rural setting to abandon her. I’m sure she doesn’t have great associations to car rides from that experience. We are taking her regularly for fun car rides to help her realize that getting in the car leads to good things.

Ruby also walks well on leash. She pulls with just a regular collar so we have been introducing her to a “gentle leader” head halter and she is doing well with that. Ruby loves going for walks and will need a family that will take her on daily outings. Ruby also needs to have the opportunity to run. A fenced in yard with another dog friend will suit that purpose well. Because she is so well trained we are also able to take her for off leash romps with her foster dogs in a safe, country setting away from the dangers of traffic. She LOVES these romps and it is so amusing to see her puppy playfulness come out as she runs and jumps all the while grinning from ear to ear. Ruby is not a hyper or high-strung dog though and does not need excessive exercise to be happy. She is calm and well behaved in the house and for the most part she has a mellow nature. Her playfulness and energy comes out mostly when she is out in the yard or on her romps with the other dogs. An active family will suit her nicely and a dog buddy will make her a very happy girl.

Overall Ruby is a dream of a dog. We have been pleasantly surprised with how easy she has been and how quickly she adjusted to our home. We have come to love Ruby very much in a very short time; she is a very loveable dog and just a joy to have around. We know that this is a special dog and will be someone’s most perfect dog ever. Ruby needs a person or family who will commit to loving her for her whole life. She will be faithfully loyal to her family forever, she needs that in return. We will be very sad when Ruby gets adopted but know she is going to make someone or some family very happy!
