My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Callie. She was born around April 2013. She has feline leukemia but she doesn't let that define her. Will you?? Callie is one of the sweetest cats ever to enter our program. She purrs just at the sight of people. Kitties with FeLV do have compromised immune systems, so she will need a bit of extra care. However, as long as she remains healthy the FeLV wont be noticed on a day to day basis. Plus she will make up for the extra care with extra love and affection!! Right now, Callie is just pleased as punch to be out of the cold barn where she was dumped last fall. Do we have any FOF fans who already have an FeLV positive kitty and would consider adding Callie to their home? Contact us if you want to meet and possibly adopt Callie!

Here is a recent facebook post about our dear Callie and a few others we have with FeLV: ***Very special FeLV cats need special adoptive homes*** Callie (female calico/tabby), Cisco (adult tux boy), and Baby Girl (tux baby girl) all have Feline Leukemia. This means people are reluctant to adopt them, as they will have a shorter life span than most cats. Fortunately for them, they were processed through our spay/neuter program where we tested them, to be sure we were not returning 'sick' cats back outside. All three cats are good buddies and have been living together for months now. But we have no place to longterm house feline leukemia kitties at our shelter. And even more importantly, these cats deserve to be adored and cared for in a real home! We understand the hesitation in adopting a cat with a contagious (to other cats only) disease, so we advise these cats go only to a home with other FeLV positive cats, or to a home without cats currently, or to a home with cats who are diligently kept up to date on their FeLV vaccinations. Callie and Cisco are from the same colony in rural Montcalm County. Baby Girl is from a feral colony here in Kent County. The older two have 'adopted' the baby and they all love having the companionship. We will gladly work out some kind of deal on helping with veterinary care costs, to anyone willing to ADOPT one or more of these precious cats. As of now they are all healthy and not in need of additional care. We would even consider a fostering situation for these kitties, to get them into a real home where they can get the love and attention they need on a daily basis. Fostering them is not a lifetime commitment but would need to be longterm. All med costs would be covered by FOF with any fostering situation.
