My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

TOBY is a 10 year old black neutered male Lab who weighs 69 pounds. His former owner was homeless "off and on" over the last few years. Each time they were homeless, Toby would go and stay somewhere temporarily, but that was no life for him. So, here he is! He's approved for kids aged 10+.

Update (9/27): Toby is still wondering why no one has come to see him. Let' see - great house manners, check; awesome with other dogs and at the dog park, check; great gardener, check; healthy and fun, check; loverboy, check; handsome, check....what the heck else are you people looking for?? Life is fun in my foster home, but I would love a furever family of my own!

Update (9/08): Toby says, OK guys, I have had a great summer in my foster home and become an expert tomato gardener. It is time for my furever home already!! Toby has EXCELLENT house manners, is great with other dogs, easy on leash, a wonderful rider, very social, the list goes on. Don't let his age fool you - he is playful, healthy and ready to roll!

Update (8/21): Toby is quite the lovable dog and loves to be loved on and patted. He is more then willing to lean against you for as long as you will pet him. Toby has learned many commands, like sit, and he is picking up others quickly. On walks, he does not pull much except in instances where there is something that has piqued his interest and he just HAS to smell it. The crate is not Toby's favorite place but he will head in. He will give a few barks to let you know he would prefer to be with you but does settle in and relax. Overall he is extremely curious and loves to counter surf mostly in an attempt to see and investigate things but will gladly help himself to any carelessly left food. He is active but not over the top and is more than willing to settle in for a nap when you feel like relaxing. He may do best in a home where he is not left for extended periods by himself and with an active family. Toby loves other dogs but isn't convinced yet about donkeys, horses, or cats. He is such a sweet and happy-go-lucky boy!

Update (7/28): Terrific Toby wants to know why no one is coming to meet him? He is a great, laid back, easy going, extremely spry and healthy 10 year old sexy senior - what more could you ask for. He loves his walks, but is just as content to play in the yard,. He loves toys and other dogs and people! Just a sweet, laid back southern gentleman! He says "come on down to Richmond and meet me"!!

Update (7/14): Toby is such an easy going guy. He loves going to the store down the street for breakfast with his foster mom and foster brother. He has also been enjoying trips to the river. Most recently his foster discovered that he has a love of tomatoes as she kept finding "bites" out of her tomatoes. She thought it was some wild animal until she caught Toby in the act! Silly boy!

Update (6/16): Toby had his vet check up and vaccine update last week. Dr. C says he is in AWESOME shape for his age! Total health check great, no signs of slowing down anytime soon!! Yippee! Now he just needs a forever family to play with!

Update (6/10): Toby has settled in nicely. He has great house manners. He enjoys laying by front door watching the neighbors walk by with their dogs and kids. He enjoys our morning walks - many times we walk to the local store where we sit outside and have our coffee and Toby and his foster brother get treats. For a senior dog, he has a very playful side. He loves, loves, loves his bones and will spend hours eating marrow bones. He is a very easy dog and just likes to be near you.

Update (6/09): Toby's foster recently took in Layla, his kennel mate at the previous rescue-check out their happy reunion! See Layla and Toby playing on YouTube - what a reunion - so fun to see!

Update (5/16): Toby is just a big ol squishy lovable teddy bear! He has plenty of pep left and loves to go for long walks and to run and play with toys in the yard. He gets along with other dogs wonderfully and has awesome house manners. He is playful, affectionate and easy going. What a charmer!

Update (5/12): Toby has a playful spirit and gets along great with other dogs. He is affectionate, easy going and enjoys playing with dog toys. He is currently being fostered with two other dogs (male and female) and the chemistry is wonderful. He walks well on leash and enjoys going on walks. Toby is housebroken and knows how to use the dog door. He has full reign of the house at all times. He responds well to treats which indicates he is trainable even at the age of 10. He will make a great and loyal companion. Toby is like a big ole teddy bear – squishy and lovable.

From foster: Hi. I am Toby. My foster mom calls me Toby Bear because she says I am soft and squishy and lovable like a Teddy Bear. I am a pretty easy going dog. I get along great with other dogs. I even share a house with a female and male dog. I walk pretty well on a leash too if you ask me, which reminds me I like going on walks. They are so much fun. When my foster mom brought me home at first she crated me but after she saw what a good boy I was and what good house manners I had she gave me privileges to the entire house. Yup – you got it – the entire house. I even get to go out the dog door and hang out in the backyard when I want to. That sun sure feels good on my black coat. I also like to curl up on a soft bed and take a nap after my long morning walks. Ahhh - Life is good now. Prior to going to a foster home, life was hard for me but my foster mom told me from here on out life will be good and I will have some nice person to take good care of me and love me the way dogs should be treated. I like fluffy toys too– my foster mom laughs at how I put them in my mouth and shake them and throw them all around. I love my food so the phrase “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” does not apply to me. I will do just about anything for a treat.
