My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Adopted 6/8/14!!!

Troy is an adorable Golden Retriever mix who is about 2 1/2 years old. Troy was one of several dogs dropped off at an Alabama shelter by a man who said he found them as strays, including SGRR’s Jack who has found his forever home already. It was originally thought that Troy had been hit by a car, but the vet who examined and cared for Troy feels he may have been born with a little crick in his neck. Therefore, Troy need to be walked with a harness and needs to eat and drink from raised bowls. Troy is a little sensitive about being hugged around the neck, but if you rub him under his chinny-chin-chin, you will see his tail wag and he will smile from ear to ear! Just check him out in his video! Troy liked playing fetch with the vet's 10-year-old son in AL and greets everyone with a wagging tail.

Troy is very well behaved, house-trained, gentle, and affectionate. He rides nicely in the car and we could go on and on about this boy’s wonderful qualities. He even like cats and would enjoy having a furry feline friend to pal around with. He walks nicely on the leash with his foster mom along with her friend and friend’s dog. His foster mom in CT told us, “Troy is walked 20 minutes in the a.m. and 30 minutes in the p.m. He enjoys a game of fetch or keep-away in the fenced in yard during the evenings. This helps him burn off some energy before he settles in for the night. You can easily take a toy or bone from him – He is just a happy-go-lucky guy who loves all, has good house manners, is playful and very affectionate!"

His former foster mom in AL told us, ""Troy is very much a people dog. Loves to cuddle, be close, and he loves to be loved. He’s very gentle and laid back. He’s met the neighbor Golden thru the fence and it was all wagging tails. Pete took him for a walk and he met 3 neighbor dogs and they just sniffed and visited nicely. When he is in the mood to play fetch, he’s loads of fun and a happy-go-lucky boy! He drops it at my feet for more. He loves a car ride and the wind in his face. He likes to sleep with you, if you let him, or at least on the floor right beside you. He would probably sleep elsewhere fine too, but he really just loves to be with his humans! He is fine with our more dog-savvy cat (who never ran), but he chased the other (but it was the cat who ran first. He just needs to live with a more dominant cat, and not a scardy-cat! He’d be happy with just people too! He’s a beautiful, fluffy, lovey-dovey pup! He’s a very sweet boy!"

Troy is neutered, up-to-date on his vaccinations, micro-chipped, and has finished treatment for heartworm. He is ready to be adopted and is being fostered in CT. He would be a great companion for just about anyone. He is a perfect choice for someone who wants to adopt a dog with the energy level of a senior dog, but wants a younger age dog. Troy is a very good boy and an easy-keeper. He promises to give you a ton of unconditional love - all he asks for is a chance at a new life.

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

SGRR Adoption Fees (subject to change)**
Puppies under 6 months $650
Young dogs 6 months - 6 years $550
Young dogs - Special Needs $450
Senior dogs 7 - 9 years $450
Seniors dogs 10 years and older $350
Senior dogs - Special Needs $300
Young Bonded Pairs $850
Senior Bonded Pairs $750

**Please note: The fees listed represent a slight increase and are effective for applications received after June 1 2014. We regret the need to increase the fees for our dogs, but found it necessary due to the increased costs we are faced with for each dog's care and placement.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.
