My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Manny is a 2-3 year old happy, playful, strong, sweet, energetic male Rottweiler who currently weighs about 100 pounds. This was not always the truth for Mr. Manny because when he was found wandering the streets of Baltimore in November 2013 he only weighed 64 pounds but his frame was that of a full grown rottie. At that time he was so emaciated that he had no muscle tone, suffered from anemia, and he had a slowed heart rate all of which decreased his energy level and stamina. He was very lucky to still be alive. Due to his lack of muscle tone Manny could barely walk or stand still, he had wobbly legs resembling that of a new born deer; Manny has webbed feet so he consistently spread his toes out so he had more feeling with the surface of the ground. When he first came into care he spent his time eating, resting, sleeping and as he began gaining weight he blossomed into a puppy. It became clear that he never had a puppyhood so he decided to make up for lost time. Manny had a lot to learn because his early deprivation seemed to stunt his emotional development, at first we thought he was not very smart but he has since proved that he is a smart boy . Manny has learned many things, however he continues to have many things to learn and will require a forever home that will have the patience to teach him. Manny is now housetrained, he occasionally has accidents but if he is walked regularly he does much better. He walks very well on leash which is amazing because I do not believe he spent much time on walks. He does love them now and he knows from body language and speech when it is time for his walk.

While in foster care Manny has lived with two human brothers (13 & 11), two dogs (one large and one small), and two cats. Manny has never shown aggression to anyone in our house or any one he has met. Manny does not always behave correctly when engaging others in play or asking for attention and he struggles following cues from other animals or people when his attention is not wanted. Cats and dogs have hissed, swatted, and growled and he often will continue to attempt to get them to play. When playing with humans or asking for love and attention he often continues to come back for more and more. It will be very good for him to have some very structured play time. He likes to play tug of war, ball, he will play fetch. It will also be important for Manny to live with older children simply because he does not know or understand his own strength and size.

Manny is extremely food focused and since he was starved he continues to scavenge for food. He will counter surf and beg for food. This is always a very long lasting behavior for dogs who have been starved. He will require ongoing support and discipline regarding these behaviors.

In terms of discipline, Manny responds well to a spray bottle and firm voice.

The most amazing part of Mr. Manny is his willingness to love and accept. Considering everything he has been through he continues to want people's love and affection. He does not have an evil bone or intention in him. He will make his forever family a very loyal loving companion. He will entertain with his silliness as well as love with all his heart.

Manny is fostered in Stratford, CT. Contact for an application is Beth at kaya1227@comcast.net
