My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Abbey came into the shelter from an abusive home. She was limping when she arrived and, after she was examined by a vet, it was discovered she has a severely dislocated hip. We tried to repair that hip but it was so bad, the leg was useless and it had to be amputated. She came through the surgery well and recovered nicely in foster care. Abbey is getting around well with only 3 legs. She loves to go on walks, she plays with the other dogs in the household and loves it. She does everything that a dog with 4 legs can do with the same energy and passion.

Her physical problems were not the only result of her environment. She also was very afraid of new things and new people. Her reaction was to back away and bark. Foster care has been great for Abbey. Although she still reacts to new things with some fear, she has gotten so much better and we believe she will continue to feel more secure as her confidence in people grows. The "NO" for not good with kids should be qualified. Due to her fearfulness, small children might be frightened of her barking at first. We believe she would not act on her fear but she might be better in a quieter environment with older (9 or older) kids who are understanding and willing to be patient with her until she is secure with her environment.

Abbey is a great house dog. She's sweet and loving and funny. She loves to be with other dogs. She just needs to feel secure and find someone with patience and the will to help this girl to overcome a very bad start to life.

Abbey is 18months old and 31lbs. A great dog who could use a break....Call her foster family for more information and a chance to meet Abbey. Phone 231-869-5580 and ask for Bill or Ginny.

She is immediately available for adoption from Oceana County Animal Shelter. **Ask about adoption transportation assistance if you do not live in the local area.** The adoption fee is $95. All adult dogs will be spayed/neutered and up to date on shots prior to adoption.
