My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This beautiful girl is LILY.

Lily is a 1 ½ year old spayed black Lab/Border Collie X. She has unique brindle markings that are barely visible on her legs and face. She is slighter built than the average Lab, weighing in at about 60lbs, she is slim and fit and has a wonderful disposition. She came to us from a rural pound as a stray. We don’t know much about the how or why she was there, only that she had recently had puppies and that somehow she was found roaming alone in the country without them. We do believe that she was discarded after having her last litter. She was skinny and had a dry, dirty coat and was obviously neglected. This sweet dog deserves so much better and that’s what she is going to get now!

When deciding Lily’s name we wanted something pretty and gentle because she was so sweet and her first night with us all she wanted to do was cuddle with you. We decided on Lily as it seemed to really suit her personality. Once we decided this was her name it was within an hour and she was already responding to her new name. We were shocked as to how fast she learned her name. Smart dog!

The first night here, Lily was very shy and uncertain about what had just happened to her. She snuggled in on the couch and was at your side every move you made. She was good with our other dogs that are in the house, but still unsure. As she started to settle in we noticed that she was very cautious around stairs but with some coaxing she has mastered them just fine. However, she doesn’t seem to wander up or down unless you call her to come with you. It almost appears that she was only allowed to be in certain areas of her previous home.

We have taken Lily for several walks and over to the park to play. We put a gentle leader training halter on her as she tends to pull and that doesn’t make for a very pleasant walk. The gentle leader is excellent for controlling and teaching on walks. Like most dogs getting accustomed to a new training device Lily does not like the gentle leader and will initially try to take it off. Our persistence and treats seem to help sway her attention and distract her from getting it off. We are sure she wasn’t walked in her previous home. The whole experience of a walk seems new to her so we are starting from scratch with her. She loves her walks and all the sights and smells around. We recently were at the park working on the ‘come’ command with her. There were 3 of us and every time she was called by one of us she came immediately. She is incredibly smart and seems to really like the discipline of learning new things. I would encourage her new family to continue this by attending a few levels of dog training with her. She is smart and an eager student so it would be a shame not to take advantage of that. For a dog that appears to have had little done with her in her first year, she is adapting quite well to a suburban lifestyle of walks and training sessions and a whole lot of cuddle time.

Lily is quite happy to sleep in her crate and is fully crate trained. She feels very safe and comfortable there. She willingly goes in at bedtime and doesn’t make a sound all night. There is one exception to that however, as we found out during the last thunderstorm. She is not a fan of thunderstorms and will cry and bark. We came down to a shaking puppy. But we sat with her and once the storm was over she went back in her crate and settled for the night. Lilly is housetrained and has not had an accident in the house in our care.

Lily is a very good eater. She is very excited at mealtime. She is learning to sit and wait until her bowl is ready and on command will then go to her bowl to eat. Lily has proven that she is an incredibly smart dog. She picks up on new commands very easily.

We have tried to introduce playing with different toys to Lily, she is somewhat interested in chasing balls, but still hasn’t taken a huge interest in them. She doesn’t seem to get what all the fuss is about. Again over time and with a little love and attention she will gain the joy that comes with play. However, chasing bees in the backyard seems to be the best game for Lily! She seems to hear them coming from some distance and she waits for them to get close and then tries to get them. But the bees have out flown her every time (good thing). It is something to watch for however in the event that she does get one of them one day.

Since being with us Lily has learned to sit, lay down and come when called. All of her commands still need work to reinforce them but she has a good start. She is really making up for lost time and working with her is very pleasurable.

We think that Lily would be great in a home with older children (aged 7 and up). She hasn’t been around other animals other then our dogs but seems to want to chase after anything that is smaller than her (ie cats, rabbits, squirrels). She would be best in a home without small animals. Lily lives comfortably with our dogs and would do well in a home with a calm and well- mannered dog, but we also believe she would like to be the only dog and get all of the snuggles and attention. Lily needs socialization to build her confidence and to attend training to get a firm hold of basic commands. Lily needs to have a place to run and play and would do well in a home a good sized fenced yard.

If you are an active family that is looking for a dog to be a devoted member of your family and you have the time and desire to train her well, go to dog school, and exercise her appropriately then this sweet girl might just be the perfect fit. Lily is looking for a forever home that will never abandon her and will care for her forever. She will be a loyal and loving companion and she is looking for the same.
