My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Iris is a wonderful 6 year old black tri standard Australian Shepherd. She is one of the 41 Aussies surrendered to the Humane Society from a breeding facility. Like most of these dogs Iris was very fearful and shy when we first met her. She didn’t want anyone petting her while in the shelter, and had to be carried out because she had never been on a leash before.

Today, Iris lives life like any normal dog. She was quickly housebroken, and thinks of her crate as a safe zone, though she rarely spends any time in it nowadays since she’s usually by her foster’s side (typical Velcro dog). She loves to play with her fur siblings and go on short walks around her foster’s neighborhood. Iris will even approach strangers to sniff them, though still is cautious about interacting with new people. Treats are the way to her heart.

At home, she frequently comes up for petting and loves getting scratches behind her ears. And she adores getting groomed. She’s a bit stubborn when it comes to learning certain commands, but knows “crate”, “outside/inside” and “down”. Her favorite things to do include stealing toys from her siblings, and cuddling while watching tv. She’s a more laid back girl and doesn’t need a lot of exercise, preferring a quieter home where she can relax.

Like many dogs who lived a good portion of life in a kennel, Iris is still nervous in new situations. When she's afraid, she backs away and looks for a safe spot to hide rather than show any aggression. She is more nervous around men than women. She also likes to hoard things in her safe spots (on her doggie bed or in her crate), possibly because she didn't have many toys throughout her life.

Iris must go to a home with a mature confident dog to help her continue to learn and grow and no young children.

She is spayed, current on vax, on hwp and frontline. Iris is fostering in the St Louis Missouri area. Please visit www.aussierescuemidwest.org to complete an adoption application!
