My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

When our magnificent Chief's number was up, we agreed to add him...as an afterthought...to an already full SUV of new foster dogs. He had been passed over in the shelter by rescue groups because of a slight limp on his right rear leg. A compromised limb on a dog is always a crapshoot: it could be absolutely nothing, or, it could mean an expensive surgery during tough times when resources are scarce.

Well, if we were practical, fiscally responsible people, we wouldn't be in rescue, so we did what we do best and rolled the dice on Chief's bum leg. And, we dare say that we rolled a winner, because after a month of quiet, non-weight bearing R & R, Chief's leg has healed, and he is walking with a proud swagger rather than a pitiful limp.

Chief had received amazing shelter behavior evaluations, and has won the hearts of everyone he has met. Four years old, Chief was surrendered to a high kill urban Animal Control facility by owners who were unwilling to get him appropriate vet care. Once he entered the shelter, he had no chance of adoption, and was immediately relegated to the euthanasia list, unless a rescue group would step up for him.

We have found Chief to be a grand gentleman, who loves everyone. This gentle giant has the calmness of spirit to attract even the most fidgety of dogs and help them relax. He has great energy about him that other dogs love. Chief could easily join a multi-dog home.

Weighing 72 pounds, Chief is a formidable presence, yet he is surprisingly easy to handle. Shelter contacts describe him as a Labrador Retriever mix, with a bit of a Border Collie DNA to explain the splashy black and white coat, which is short, and requires minimal grooming.

Chief is a medium energy dog, who requires at least one or two leisurely walks each day. He would be a great choice for dog savvy family, couple or single, who enjoy large, calm dogs. Chief has a great temperament and is always cordial when greeting strangers. He would do well with other dogs, kids and cats.

Like most rescue dogs, Chief's obedience work and training has been sadly neglected. He is eager to please and works for praise or treats. His calm demeanor allows him to focus on the task at hand, and he readily waits for his handler's cue. He will be pass his Canine Good Citizenship exam in no time!

Chief is in excellent health and has been neutered. He has been vaccinated for rabies, DHLPP (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo and parainfluenza). He has had the 4snap test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been microchipped and dewormed.
