My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Vera is a very special girl and our favorite type of dog to work with at Second Chance...she was a "feral" puppy and completely terrified, afraid to even move and was flattened in the back of her cage at an area shelter when we spotted her, paralyzed by fear. She grew up in a yard with her sister and was obviously never handled or given any positive human attention, walked on a leash, or probably even touched...until one day at almost a year old her owners decided they didn't want them anymore and dragged them into the shelter. We knew as soon as we saw her and her sister we had to find space for them... at Second Chance we understand their fears and find it so rewarding to work with them and see them slowly but surely become more trusting, each at their own speed. The one thing that almost all of these types of dogs have in common is that they LOVE other dogs and are comforted by the presence of a pack, and Vera is no difference. Even as terrified as she was arriving in her foster home and feeling a collar and leash on her neck for the first time, she couldn't help but wag her tail and crawl up to kiss every new dog that approached her! While still a work in progress, she has come a long way in the month we have had her and is starting to approach people when she sees other dogs approaching for attention, and learned the daily routine quickly from watching the pack. She is still more interested in being with the dogs than in getting human attention or petting and will need a very special patient home that will give her time and space to eventually warm up on her own terms. Since she missed out on so much socialization as a puppy, she will probably never be a "normal" social dog and always have some fear of people, but we are hopeful she will continue to progress and learn from her doggie friends and eventually at least become more comfortable around her caretakers. Her ideal home would have multiple more outgoing dogs for her to play with, a securely fenced yard for safety since she is still mastering leash walking, and someone who will love her unconditionally and accept her for who she is. She is only 30lbs and probably won't get much bigger if at all, and is one of the most gorgeous dogs we've ever seen. Please email an application if you are interested.

We do not have a shelter- all our pets are in foster homes and can be seen by appointment only during the week, or at our weekly pet adoptions every Sunday at the Animal Clinic of Morris Plains from 12:30 to 3PM at 3009 Route 10 East next to 5 Star Car Wash (formerly Boulder Car Wash) in Morris Plains (Denville on GPS). To help us better match a pet to your household, we request you fill out an application on our homepage www.secondchance.petfinder.com and copy and paste it into an email, or print it and bring it to our adoption day when you come. Local inquiries only please- we do not do long distance adoptions.
