My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This happy lad is Stubby and he is a 1yr old true mutt and we think he’s perfect! Stubby is part Lab, German Shepherd, and Beagle. He has a very unique look and gets a lot of positive comments about how handsome he is. He has a Lab’s happy and loving temperament, a Shepherds colour pattern and he gets the neat brindle colouring from his hound roots. Oh, and the short legs which brought upon his name. Now he’s not Corgi short or anything, but when you take a look at his 55lb body you certainly realize that his legs should be longer than they are. It gives him a very cute look and makes him more of a medium/large sized dog then a truly large dog. He is a great size for most living arrangements and combined with the fact that he is quiet and calm in the home he could pretty much live anywhere as long as he has someone to love him.

Stubby came to us in pretty poor condition. He was an unclaimed stray at a rural pound. He was full of worms and had terrible coat condition. His fur felt like wire bristles it was that dry and dirty. Stubby promptly was dewormed and put on a quality diet. He has gained weight and his coat is slowly bouncing back. The dry parts are shedding out and the fur growing back is soft and shiny. All Stubby needed was proper nutrition to be at his best. He’s had a bath to remove the grime and he was so good for his bath. He stood there like a trooper and didn’t fuss. It must have felt good for him to wash off the filth. Stubby is very good natured and endures pretty much anything with a good attitude.

Stubby is being fostered in a home with very young children and he does very well with them. He is not possessive of his dish or toys and accepts all the cuddles and hugs the kids bestow on him. Stubby would be fine in a home with kids but would do well in an adult home as well. As long as he gets attention and love he is happy. He is also being fostered with a cat, a kitten in fact, and he is fine. The cat interests him and they play and he is not aggressive with it. He would do well in a home with a cat that is accustomed to dogs and not aggressive towards dogs. Stubby has also been around dogs in our care and he did quite well. He would probably prefer to be the only dog in the home and get all the attention but he would also do fine with a calm and good natured other dog to share his home with. We don’t feel that Stubby had a lot of socialization with other dogs prior to arriving in our rescue and he was shy of the ones we had him with initially but he settled in well and in no time he was ripping around the yard with them, playing.

Stubby is smart and picks up on things quickly. He is housetrained and crate trained. He knows some basic obedience and is food motivated so we use that in his training to encourage him. Anyone considering Stubby will need to commit to taking him to dog obedience school to further his training and strengthen the bond between him and his new family. Stubby is a quick learner and should excel at school. Stubby is also very loyal and he loves his people very much. He has bonded strongly with his foster dad and follows him everywhere and gathers up his socks into a pile when he gets the chance so that he can lay in his scent. Stubby would like a family where he can be taken for daily walks and ideally have a fenced yard to play in. Stubby is a moderate energy dog; very calm in the house but capable of doing whatever exercise you want to do with him. He gets his energy requirements met with a couple walks a day and some play time. You won’t have to run him for hours to make this guy happy. Being that he has part Beagle in him he is very scent driven so he cannot be allowed off leash in an unfenced area as he may wander off on the trail of something good. He is good on leash though and we are using a Gentle Leader training halter on him as he liked to pull otherwise. He has accepted this training halter without issue and is a pleasure to walk.

Stubby is fine in the car and travels well. He is very quiet; we have rarely heard him bark. He is an easy dog to live with and an even easier dog to love. He is very affectionate and loves pets and cuddles and snuggles. He asks for very little and loves any attention you can give him. Stubby needs a family that will never let him be a stray dog again, who will commit to him and give him a place to call his own forever. He is a people dog and needs to be a part of his family. He will not like being left out in the yard alone. He wants to be with his people. And when you aren’t home he will rest quietly in his crate until your return and then be joyfully happy when you get back. You can’t have a bad day when you come home to a dog that adores you and this dog will certainly do that!

All Pound Dog Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, de-wormed (if required), and microchipped prior to adoption. The adoption donation of $400 is applied to assist in the costs of veterinary care and the overall care of the dog.
