My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Adopted 9/20/14!!!

Update: Gentle, sweet Madison is almost ready to be adopted!! She has started her heartworm treatment, is doing well, and will be ready to travel to her forever home in early September. Madison is happiest in a quiet environment. She gets along great with cats and does fine with older, settled dogs. She enjoys ball play with people and loves having a fenced yard to explore. And she loves to sit near her humans and receive attention--something we believe is new to this dear soul. Madison is more settled and content every day, and you can see her sweetness in her new photos. If Madison could thank everyone who has helped her along thus far, she would be thanking many people. If you would like to give Madison the loving, forever home she deserves, at the end of her rescue journey, please ask for her now - she is almost ready!!

Foster Update: Madison is filling out!!! Her ribs are less obvious, she is more steady on her feet, and she even ran across the yard to her Foster Mom recently! She is up to 48 lbs. and we are hoping she can begin her heartworm treatment in a couple of weeks. Her new video shows Madison exploring her back yard, looking much improved. She likes being petted and sitting next to her Foster Mom or Dad on the couch, or on a lap. She is an absolute love bug!!

Foster Update: Madison is getting stronger every day. She eats well, takes lots of naps, and even trotted over to Foster Cheryl when called to come in. This was a HUGE deal for a dog who was so weak she could barely stand. Madison likes sitting next to her Foster Mom on the couch, and climbs right onto her lap! She gets along nicely with the resident senior dog, but a young dog is too much for her right now….she warns the youngster to stay away if she gets too close. When Foster Mom throws a ball, Madison turns toward it as if she remembers what chasing a ball is about -- but that is still in her future. Stay tuned as we see this sweet girl's personality unfold.

Madison's Story: We first heard about Madison in May. A victim of an abuse case, she was left to fend for herself in a back yard near Mobile, AL, and was only discovered when other dogs entered the yard and people noticed her. By that time, she had either been alone a long time and had not received any food or care from her owners, who could not be located. She was taken to a shelter, and Sunshine was called to help. It took some time, but our volunteers finally succeeded in bringing Madison to Sunshine's vet where everyone was stunned and saddened to see this sweet dog in such a horrible, pitiful condition. Pictures tell some of the story; being with her brings you to tears. Her weight on June 19 was 37 lbs, and she should be at least 65 lbs.

Madison is estimated to be about 9 years old, and is one of the sweetest dogs imaginable. She is a tall girl with a bushy Golden tail, and time will tell if she is a purebred Golden, or a golden mix. We do not yet know if her coat is short because of the severe neglect she suffered, or if she is part lab. Madison must gain weight and then undergo heartworm treatment before she will be ready for adoption. The good news is that her blood-work is all good, she hears well, she sees fine, and she moves without pain. And, she gained 2-1/2 lbs. in her first 3 days with us -- good girl, Madison!!

Madison reminds us how forgiving dogs can be. She shows affection, loves being touched, and appreciates every soft word spoken to her. She is good with other dogs, and great with cats. The cats at the vet's office just loved her and climbed all over her! It will be several weeks before Madison is well enough to go to a forever home, but we are posting her story so that you can follow her progress. We will post additional updates as we learn more about this precious girl.

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

SGRR Adoption Fees (subject to change)**
Puppies under 6 months $650
Young dogs 6 months - 6 years $550
Young dogs - Special Needs $450
Senior dogs 7 - 9 years $450
Seniors dogs 10 years and older $350
Senior dogs - Special Needs $300
Young Bonded Pairs $850
Senior Bonded Pairs $750

**Please note: The fees listed represent a slight increase and are effective for applications received after June 1 2014. We regret the need to increase the fees for our dogs, but found it necessary due to the increased costs we are faced with for each dog's care and placement.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
