My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Dakota has a very unique look and a very interesting face. She is a very gentle dog who is willing to trust and who is slowly coming out of her shell and enjoying being in a loving home environment. She is fine with children but is not really a playful dog so would probably be best as an adult's companion. She does bond strongly to her person and is a loyal and affectionate girl. Dakota is approximately 5 - 6 years old and currently weighs 50 - 60 lbs.

Here is what Dakota's foster family had to say:

Dakota is a sweet girl who has completely changed since she first came to us in a big way. It took her no time to change from the frightened dog who wouldn't look at me to the sweet girl who just wants pets and to give me kisses. She will actually come and lie her paw on my leg to get pets. She is fine with children although she gets a little overwhelmed when there are too many children all milling about and trying to pet her at the same time. With people she takes a bit to warm up but if you allow her to come to you it is all kisses for everyone.

Dakota is good around other dogs but she basically doesn't interact or initiate play with them. I have no idea how she would be with a cat but she does seem to have a lot of interest in my parrot. She has a knack of catching flies in mid-air (yep a natural LOL). I haven't seen her around any squirrels and such so I really don't know what her prey drive is like or if she has a prey drive.

Dakota has beautiful coloring in her coat and her face has a kind of exotic look to it which gives her a uniqueness all her own. When Dakota arrived her hair was so matted and it took me two hours to comb it out but she was a trouper and never flinched a bit, it seemed to relax her. She will need someone that will keep up with her grooming to keep her coat beautiful and soft.

Dakota does not engage in play of any kind, I think under the circumstances of her past life she doesn't know how to play and needs to be taught how to, she just loves to cuddle up beside your feet or by the open patio door to catch the breeze. She will sit for hours and just watch the birds in the backyard. She is a quiet dog, only barks to alert of someone at door or in the house she doesn't know and settles down when told.

Dakota is not a counter surfer, but will beg for food, however she has not tried to jump up on anyone, my kids, or the table. She knows sit, wait, off, and lie down. A funny story the second day I took her for a walk, I got her leash ready sat it down went back to get it and it was gone, I found Dakota sitting at my front door with the leash in her mouth waiting patiently to go for a walk. She has also learned to open the patio screen door with her nose when she wants in from outside. She is a very intelligent girl and if given a chance I am sure there are more surprises waiting. Dakota is fully house trained and is very good at letting you know when she needs to go out. Dakota settles nicely in her crate with no issues but I do recommend crating this dog, not because of her getting into trouble but I feel that she sees her crate as a safe place and she feels secure being in it for her own state of mind, its kind of her GO TO place when she feels afraid or things get a little too much for her. Walks on a leash, pulls minimal but can be easily trained not to pull.

Dakota's story is a sad one, and when she first came I wasn't sure how she was gonna react around me and my kids but I saw something in her eyes that told me she just wanted a place to belong. This dog is not the same dog from the beginning, she has slowly come out of her shell, she now wags her tail when she greets me, she will often sit beside me and lay her paw on my lap to alert me that she wants to give me a kiss. She did have a fear of the dark but now with patience and guidance she will now leave the house in the dark and will roam around the backyard with just the porch light on and someone at the door or maybe standing on the porch to let her know they are still there and she is ok. She still needs some work on that part but is making great strides. Dakota will make a great companion for anyone who will take the time to realize that her past was not the greatest, will still be firm and lead her, but not be harsh as she will quickly lose trust again. She has a wonderful endearing personality that is all her own and I see great things in her future with the right person, or persons.

I feel the ideal situation would be with a family with a bit older children, maybe 7 and up, as she doesn't like to be poked and prodded by the younger kids. A home with someone who can be there with her most of the time or work P/T hours. A family who is willing to put up with the shedding and able to take on the responsibility of grooming her everyday as she easily gets matted. She needs patience and guidance. She will need a backyard to lie in as she enjoys the outdoors, small to large would be ideal. I would highly recommend that maybe she will be the only animal in the home as I feel after everything she has been through she needs the love and attention all to herself, but I am biased so whatever will be best for her.

If you would like to give this deserving dog a family to love, please submit an application for consideration.
