My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Richie Rich – the poor little rich boy.

FOSTER LOCATION: Nampa, ID

Our boy Richie Rich may not have any money but he is rich in love and charm! This poor little rich guy is searching for his forever home – is that you?

This handsome 5 year old Basset Hound is an absolute doll, a real people lover who thinks he should really be someone’s lap dog. He has yet to meet anyone that he does not like; but does tend to jump up on you, which is not unusual for a Basset. People tend to train them to do this to avoid having to have to bend over. This is bad for their backs so he will need a home that will teach him that 4 feet on the floor is the best option. We have not had Richie around kids but Basset’s are pretty laid back and we think he’d love the attention so kids should be fine.

Richie Rich like so many hounds is going to be a bit of a challenge for someone and does need some training. He's also not housebroken. He goes outside if a door is open -- dog door or otherwise -- but if there isn't one open he will potty on the floor. If there is a good habit with pottying in the house he does find a hard floor to do it on rather than carpet.

He is great with other dogs and is currently living with 3 little dogs and has been to day camp at Camp Bow Wow in Meridian and did great. We are unsure how he is around cats, but expect he'd be ok.

Richie Rich was a stray before we got him and he was pretty emaciated. We have been working on fattening him up but he’s not back to full weight; he is very healthy though. He's a counter surfer and eats his food way to fast so he needs a slow feeder bowl (we will send one with him new adopters). None of this is surprising given that background; it is pretty common for dogs who starve to go through a period where they will do anything to get food.

He'd prefer to sleep with you, but until he learns it's not ok to pee in the house, a crate is the way to go. He's not excited about that either, but we are working on that.

If you've never had a Basset, please read up on them. They are a wonderful, mellow breed, but are stubborn and need someone who understands them. They may be short, but are relatively large dogs that need moderate exercise. They will follow their nose rather than come when called. They are scent hounds bred to track small game. But they'd rather be with their people in doors, on the couch.

If you think you have what it takes to offer this amazingly sweet boy a forever home please go to our website and complete an adoption application: http://fuzzypawzrescue.com/adopt/adoption-application-2/

Richie Rich is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.

There is a $150 adoption fee for him.
