My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Houston is the best dog ever! He makes you feel very loved. He is always happy to see me and greets me warmly with a wagging tail. He is really quiet in the house and doesn't bark even when my own dogs are barking. He loves to be curled up beside me or nearby and makes a great companion. He has a moderate energy level. He is quiet in the house but LOVES to go for walks. Houston is approximately 1 - 2 years old and currently weighs 24 lbs.

Here is what else Houston's foster family had to say:

Houston is very friendly with everyone and he usually greets everyone politely. He sometimes gets excited and has to be reminded not to jump up on people. He is not shy at all. He greets other dogs very appropriately when we are out for walks. I don't know how he is around cats. He goes nuts when he sees squirrels in the park though. So far he has not shown fear of anything. He will listen to strange noises outside but does not react to them.

Houston loves his walks. He almost dances when he sees me get his halter and will run over and put his head up to "help" me put it on. He also knows when I get my keys that this usually means I leave house. He runs to the door hoping that I'll take him along with me. When out on a walk, he is totally in his element and is either looking around taking in the sights or has his nose to the ground catching the scents. He also loves to be petted and curl up next to me on the couch. Houston doesn't like to be left and will cry or howl when I first leave the house. This subsides and he is does quiet down. I usually give him a couple of treats before I leave and am trying to teach him that my absence can be positive.

Houston has not chewed anything other than his own toys. He will lick his blanket if he is upset about being left at home. He does show interest in the garbage and in anything that is left on the coffee table but will leave it if told to do so. He understands "come" and "leave it". Houston is fully house trained. He is the only foster dog I've had that has not had any accidents in the house. He does not ask to go out though. I haven't crated Houston but I have left him in an xpen when I went to work. He doesn't like going in the xpen and cries when I leave. However, he does settle down after a bit and has not been destructive at all.

Houston walks very well on a leash unless he sees a squirrel or smells something of great interest to him. He will need some more training on listening when there are distractions nearby. I would recommend using a harness instead of a collar. He did pull when I used a collar but that immediately stopped once I switched to a harness. Houston will jump into the back seat of the car with no difficulties but he needs to be tied in otherwise he will jump all over the car.

I have never wanted a Beagle as a pet and Houston has made me change my mind. You couldn't ask for a better dog than this guy. He makes me feel very loved and has such a quiet steady manner that makes him an attractive pet. I can't say enough about this dog. I think once he has a permanent home, his slight separation anxiety will disappear and he will make a lovely family member. He does need some further obedience training. A "refresher" course would be beneficial for him and his new family.

Houston will do well in a home where the family is active and he gets to go for a walk/hike everyday. He is very loving and would make an active single person or couple, a great companion. He would be fine with another friendly dog in the home or older children that would like to play with him and take him for walks. Beagles will follow their nose and anyone owning a Beagle knows that they cannot be left off leash in an open area.

If you would like to make this handsome boy part of your family, please submit an application for consideration.
