My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

BENNY is an 10 year chocolate neutered male Lab who weighs 70 pounds. He may have gray accents in all the right places ~ but acts like a young dog otherwise. Benny lives to play, to please and to just be with his peeps. Benny would not do well in a townhouse, apt/condo, etc. He needs a quiet setting with someone home more than gone. Benny is not supposed to wear collars of any kind due to Laryngeal Paralysis surgery a harness which he has is fine.. When he eats he needs an elevated food dish system that comes with him. He's approved for kids aged 10+.

Update (9/04): Benny continues to be a great foster. He has recently won the honor of being the cover model for the Rescued Labs Calendar. However, you would never know he has become a superstar. Benny continues to be down to earth and really only wants to retrieve. Benny is looking for a family with fewer stairs in their house. He would love to have a place to retrieve tennis balls. Benny enjoys going for strolls in the neighborhood. Benny will alert you of stranger-danger in your neighborhood, but he loves to greet people. He's a very good traveler and will settle in the car for a nap.

Update (8/17): Benny is a very peppy gentleman who loves meeting new people! He wants to make sure that they know he's around and deserves all the attention, so he'll usually drop off his toys near feet and give a little "ruff" to get someone to play with him. Benny's silly side has come out more and more. He now likes to put his head in his foster' slap to have it rubbed. He walks up, gets his head rubbed, walks away and comes back to repeat. Benny would love a family that is patient and kind and one that loves to throw tennis balls. The fewer the stairs the better for Benny. Benny is a great boy.

Update (8/15): Benny is such a lovely boy and is enjoying his time at his foster's house! His day starts around 6 or 6:30 with his stroll around the block, breakfast, and then a relaxation time while his foster gets ready for the day. He then gets to go outside for some retrieving with the tennis ball, which he loves! He's an awesome runner, loves the Chuck-It, and brings the ball right back. He would play forever! If the kiddie-pool is set up, he will wade through that a few times and occasionally lay down. During the work day, Benny does fine being left alone uncrated. He usually snoozes on a fouton in a back bedroom or the couch/chair in the living room, but he's not picky as long as there is a soft spot somewhere, and he has perfected the "horizontal-stretch-across-the-entire-length-of-the-bed" position.

Update (7/22): Benny has been here almost one week and he is really settling into the routine of the house. He knows when it’s time to nap away the day while his foster is at work, when it’s time to go to bed, and, most importantly, when it’s time to play in the evening! He always likes to remind his foster that he needs his playtime with a gentle bark. He lives and loves to retrieve, and he is fast and agile for his age. He's great on a leash and walks at a slow pace and always by his foster’s side. He loves meal time and is very gentle when it comes to taking treats. At night, he has been sleeping on his foster’s bed, and he can be a little bit of a bed hog when he sleeps across the bed. But somehow it’s all okay when he decides to paw for some attention and be silly. He enjoys his foster’s dog's company but does not seem to need another dog in his life. would be happiest in a home that has as few stairs as possible. Benny is a really sweet guy.

Update (7/17): Benny is loving life at his foster home and even gets to sleep on the couches there, which he loves. Benny is recovering nicely from his surgery and now is looking for someone who will love him and provide comfort and stability. He is house trained and loves to retrieve. He is also very gentle with treats and eats from a raised dish. Benny would like a home with few stairs, and he could either live with another dog or without. He also enjoys a short walk and walks like a gentleman on his Easy Walk Harness. Benny is such a great boy and is ready to start his next journey in life!

Update (7/14): Sweet Benny was found wandering in someone's yard with severe respiratory distress, dangerously high body temperature and heat stroke. But he pulled thru and is now hoping to find someone who will love him and provide comfort and stability in his sunset years. Benny is house trained and sleeps thru the night until about 6:30, then after doing his business outside, he will go back to sleep until 8:00. He sleeps on a dog bed in his foster's bedroom. He walks like a gentleman outside and does not pull at all. He loves meeting people and dogs on his walks. He was friendly and loving with his foster family within minutes of meeting them, resting his head on their laps and enjoying their attention. He is fine with other dogs. He has an odd-sounding bark, like a fog's horn, due to laryngeal surgery back in June. He is completely recovered from surgery, but needs to eat from an elevated dish and walk with a harness rather than a collar.

He has been left alone in the house for short periods and has not bothered anything. He waits patiently for his food, accepts treats very gently and does not counter surf at all. He does not whine or beg for food. He did not sit on the couch until invited. Benny has some arthritis so it would be best for him to have a home with few stairs. He does not require a lot of exercise, but does love to retrieve his toys and balls. After playing for 5-10 minutes he likes to rest. Benny is not a velcro dog, but likes to be in the same room with his people or at least be able to see them. He would prefer to be with someone who is home more than not, he is low maintenance, is seeking a place to call home and would be a wonderful, faithful companion to anyone who will show him a little love.

Update (7/12): Benny arrived as a foster in a home with another resident senior dog. After the initial introductions a routine that fit everyone was quickly settled into just fine. No squabbles over beds, toys, food or his foster mom. Benny is a wonderful house guest. He has a very adorable “old man” bark (more like a fog horn) that he uses to let you know what he wants – to go outside, to play, to go for a walk, to be loved on. He is very polite. No arguments over food or treats. You would swear all treats are butterflies – he takes them so softly. This “old” guy LOVES everyone … and everything – people, dogs, toys. We have not met cats yet so no comment there right now. He walks on a harness just fine.

Someone really loved Benny in a former life. He knows all the usual commands and corrections -- Waits to be allowed on the sofa, if asked -- and settles in fine when it is time to go to bed. He sleeps though the night and is so happy to see you in the morning. He does full flights of stairs, just a little slowly. He bounds up 5 the outside stairs no problem at all. He is a drum line unto himself with a killer happy lab tail. Benny loves water. Benny truly loves everyone. He does live to play ball and to retrieve in bursts of energy followed by a short nap. He brings you the toy or ball of choice, drops it politely at your feet or on your lap and is ready to go.

Benny would be a wonderful addition to any home where they who love to play ball. He would also be ideally suited for any age individual that likes the outdoors and wants a walking companion – but not too far in the heat. And if you are slightly older – Benny would be your forever companion (as long as you can throw a ball) for a lifetime.
