My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

2014-06-29: Huxley is a beautiful year old black lab who has had a very rough start in his short lifetime. He was hit by a car at 10 months old, which fractured his femur, and his previous ‘family’ left him in that condition in their backyard for almost a month while they decided what they were going to do. Finally, decision reached…nothing! And with that they dumped him at the shelter. He was a shelter favorite, and they contacted SCLRR about him, who collaborated with another great rescue, Hope for Paws, to have some very expensive surgery done on Huxley’s leg to try and fix it. They did bone grafts, pins, the works, and his prognosis was good if he remained extremely restricted and calm for 6-8 weeks. Which is not an easy thing to do with an active, playful, 10 month old lab. He hated being crated, and would cry and whine to get out, especially when he saw and heard the other dogs in the house. Despite that things were going reasonably well until about week 5, when he somehow managed to pull the screws from the plate in his leg overnight in his crate. He went back to see the doctor , who put him back into surgery and tried to repair his leg again, but there was too much damage to the bone and it was necessary to amputate it. Back into rehab, his favorite thing, but once we got the sutures out, and he was allowed to start being a puppy, he blossomed. His tail never stops wagging, even when he’s asleep and dreaming. The absence of his leg has done nothing to dampen his energy level or his spirit, and he chases and wrestles the other dogs, and loves to play tug of war with his BFF foster brother Bodie the bulldog. He LOVES the pool, and is a great swimmer. He will fetch his squeaky toy as long as you will throw it, and throw it in himself when you won’t. He is extremely affectionate and loves to hang with his humans (mostly me) too, and follows me everywhere. He even goes on morning runs with me. He is non-destructive in the house, despite being a pup, but when I am gone for longer than a little while, I do crate him, just in case temptation gets the better of him. He sleeps through the night on his bed beside me, and is housetrained. We have just begun to work on basic commands, and he has begun to walk much better on this thing called a leash that he was never introduced to. He still gets a little too excited when he sees new dogs, and wants to go to them and play, but he is a really smart dog who seems to ‘get it’ pretty quickly, and will learn fast with the proper training. A home with another dog would be ideal for him, although as long as he could expend his energy with enough play time, he would do okay as an only dog. Since he doesn’t jump, and takes treats very gently, younger children would also not be a problem. He is a very sweet, exceptionally beautiful dog that really deserves a second chance with a real family who will give him all the love and attention he has
