ADOPTED ON 10-25-14 - Journey’s foster mom’s shows her affection for her every time she talks or writes about her; she describes her as a very loving dog. Journey’s southern foster mom wants us to know “what a great dog Journey is. She is beautiful and smart and she said she would keep her if she did not have five dogs already”.

Journey gathers with the other dogs for a pat on the head and attention and returns the warm-heartedness to her mom and lets the other dogs in the home know that she loves their mom too. She loves other dogs and likes to play with her foster sister Jenny. She and Jenny like to get on an old trampoline and bounce around; smiles of sheer joy are always on their face; they play real well together. Neither dog has ever barked or growled during the playtime, only show their enjoyment. Her foster mom loves watching them play because she tells us “they are just so cute”.

If you like to take daily long walks, she is the picture-perfect companion that will love being with you. A fenced yard would be great but not necessary as long as she gets her daily exercise. She is a smart girl and after all she has been through, she deserves a loving home that will give her the best care, she has earned it. She is a perfect match with a family with children; she will protect them and be a magnificent companion for a child to grow up with. She did well around her foster 10-year-old niece; she was awesome and showed no signs of nervous behavior, which is part of the breed character.

Journey is a Black Mouth Cur; BMC’s are not well known in the North. However, the dogs are a very extraordinary and a wonderful breed because they are well known for their loving personality and their gentle relationship with children. Journey is a purebred BMC, she has a natural bobbed tail, which is a characteristic of the breed. Please be sure to take a few minutes and read “About the Breed” at the end of her bio for more information about BMC’s.

Journey was found all alone to fend and take care of herself in the wild; she lived without shelter in the rain during thunder and lightening storms. She was always in danger of wild animals looking for a meal. Add that she was pregnant and it is more then most of us can bear to think about but even through all that, Journey did not loose her loving personality and trust for humans.

Most dogs in the south like Journey are taken to an open field and dropped off; it could have been because she was pregnant. We don’t know for sure but whatever brought her to fending for herself, she was in danger and in a desperate situation, which was definitely not going to get any better without help. Journey was picked up by an Animal Control Officer and taken to the local dog pound where a handful of very special volunteers look over every dog. These volunteers give the dogs vaccinations, assess the dog’s personality and work tirelessly with the dog on a daily basis hoping that they can get them to loving homes. They are truly a dog’s best friends.

Due to Journey’s condition and the fact that she was about to deliver pups, Journey luckily went to the top of the list. She was taken to a foster that already had five dogs of her own but her southern foster made room for her and her babies. Money to feed and take care of the dogs comes from the foster and without this small group of rescuers; many more dogs would have not make it. They lovingly clean them up, feed them, love them and tend to their every need daily. Adopters get a lifetime of the fruits of their labor and we are honored to be working along side of them.

Journey is in excellent health, she is heartworm negative, still needs work on housetraining although that is normal till the dogs adjust to their final home and a permanent schedule. She has no food issues, has shown no signs of fears; we don’t know how she is with cats. However, because she has such a sweet personality and wants to please, with the right guidance we feel she would do well with a cat. She is not a problem barker but will alert you if she hears something suspicious from time to time. She will play fetch with a ball; she eagerly goes on walks, wants to be your buddy and has a healthy active activity level. She has always been in a crate while traveling, when she was not traveling she has been in a pen and she is good on a leash.

Her JOURNEY was not easy. It breaks our hearts to think of what her first few years must have been like but those experiences are long gone and she is a happy, happy dog. She is a shining light of love and happiness today. The work we do is so important for the dogs, of course but it is also essential for the families they go to; they learn a tremendous lesson about unconditional love, and the full reward that the steady giving of care and affection can bring. She would do well in a home that can give her lots of kisses and hugs.

Journey is truly the sweetest, gentlest dog you will ever meet. She is a lady with soulful eyes who will reward you with love and affection in a non-demanding manner. She is comfortable lounging in a house or exploring the outside yard. She simply wants to be in a home where she is loved and given the attention she deserves. In return, she will provide you with companionship and unconditional love.
Unconditional love - isn’t that what we all wish for?

ABOUT THE BREED
Life Expectancy: Live an average of 12-16 years.
Weight: Averages 55 to 90 pounds with females being smaller.
Height: Averages 20 to 25 inches in height at the withers.
Coat: Short smooth coat.
Color Typically a reddish yellow or fawn color with a black muzzle or mask.

Cur Tail: Most of the Cur breeds have and are allowed natural bobtails; some do not. The bobtail is an advantage because you won't have to worry about stepping on their tail, closing the door on it, or the tail cleaning off the table with a clean sweep. The bobtail does not affect the performance of the dog and therefore the "cur tailing" tail is a mark of the breed, hence, Black Mouth Cur.

Temperament: BMCs are quite fearless, however, they are very dedicated to its family. These dogs thrive on strong and dependable relationships with humans, love attention and playing the role of guardian. This breed is very intelligent and generally easy to train. As a pet, the BMC is obedient, loyal, loving, and very affectionate.
With Children: When in the presence of children BMCs have a tendency to diminish their playfulness and become gentler and protective. Thee BMC gets along well with children they are known for its sweet and gentle approach to small children. The BMC enjoys spending time outdoors, playing games such as tug-of-war and fetch, and having plenty of room to roam, run, and play.

Other Pet Compatibility: The BMC was bred as a homestead dog that would protect its family and home against intruders. This means that a well-bred BMC is territorial. Most BMCs off their "turf" work well with other dogs, but on their family property will chase the same dog away. Their turf can be viewed by the dog as the family’s home, land, truck, or sometimes proximity to "their person".’

Trainability: Due to its outgoing attitude and eagerness to please and impress its owner, the BMC generally responds very well to basic training and commands. This bright breed has the ability to learn to perform most any task its trainer is willing to take the time to teach. Establishing immediate dominance, trust, and respect is key to successfully training the BMC. These dogs require a confident, patient, and caring handler with a strong gentle approach to repetitive exercises and tasks.

Benefits of the Breed: The Cur has a burning desire to please his master. There are many benefits to owning a BMC, such as its no hassle, low maintenance coat. This curious breed is always on the go, and often quite amusing and entertaining to watch while at play. These dogs are alert and territorial, making effective watchdogs by announcing the arrival of guests and unwanted visitors, and serving as a deterrent to would-be intruders. The BMC is obedient, loyal, loving, and very affectionate, making an excellent working dog, family pet, and companion alike

Housetraining: BMCs are very clean animals that don’t like to soil their space. Crate training a puppy or dog is highly recommended for those times when you cannot directly supervise the dog. Later the puppy will be old enough to be trusted alone in the house. Except at night when he should go to sleep, do not use to crate for longer than three to four hours in the day. Nor should you use it as punishment as the puppy will view the crate as discipline and hate going into it.

During the housebreaking phase, it is recommended to feed your dog on a regular schedule. The biggest problem is once a dog has had one accident in the house, there is a urine smell that the puppy detects and his instinct to continue mark where he smells urine. This is how wild dogs let other dogs know that this territory is taken and for dogs not in the pack to go elsewhere. If you keep the house clean and pour some urine outside where you want him to go and then praise him when he marks there you will find house-breaking goes very easily.

It's sad these second chances are even necessary for these dogs, but we are committed to them and will devote the time and energy to their rehoming, and not just MOVE them to save more dogs. We diligently and responsibly seek good matches as we don't want to re-home the dog again. These animals have already endured more than they should have, and through no fault of their own. It behooves us to be honest and forthright, and we appreciate the same in return from applicants. It's that winning combination of reciprocal trust and respect that allows for successful placements to be made. Happy adopters translate to happy dogs, and that's our goal!

Thank you for respecting that we all donate our time to saving these animals, and understand we value your philanthropic and compassionate desire to help be part of the rescue team. That said, you'll understand why we are committed to the well-being of our charges and consider this veterinarian check mandatory. If you are a first-time dog owner, we will work with you every step of the way! ADVOCACY AND EDUCATION ARE AS MUCH A PART OF RESPONSIBLE RESCUE AS ADOPTION! And it takes a RESCUE VILLAGE to help the most dogs possible in a thorough manner to ensure success on all fronts, and then some! It is an awful feeling to fail a dog, and we can't continue rescue if we don't do everything we can to ensure good matches for the dogs and tender families who might adopt them. THANK YOU FOR UNDERSTANDING.

Although we are an extremely small rescue group, we understand and respect your family's eagerness to be in touch and learn as much as you can about the dogs you are considering adopting. Our very experienced and devoted trainer will be happy to share all aspects of OUR RESCUE DOGS to determine compatibility once you've submitted your application, and another of our volunteers will explain the whole process of our rescue and answer any questions you might have as well
