My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Kona: 7 1/2 years old, Spayed Female, Chocolate Lab, 55 Lbs

Kona was adopted from GGLRR by a South Bay couple who have loved and cared for her for the past four years. Sadly, the wife has developed health issues and they can no longer keep Kona, so this wonderful girl is now available for a new family to give her another wonderful home. Kona was originally found as a stray roaming around in a park. Her guardian angel brought her home to his family. She was micro chipped, so owner was contacted. He said that he did not want her anymore and that he did not have time for her. So, this wonderful rescuer kept Kona at his home. Suspecting that she might be pregnant, he took her to the vet, and the vet said that it was probably just a false pregnancy. About a week later, he found her under his porch giving birth to 5 puppies. This is what he had to say about her: “Kona would like a home where she is treated like the princess she believes she is. Wherever you go, she would like to be right there with you. She loves to ride in the car. She is housebroken. Being close to her people is what truly makes her happy. She doesn’t whine or chew and will only bark when someone comes to the front gate. She gets along great with my older lab. She loves her walks but will pull. She is a very affectionate girl who loves to give kisses and loves to be loved!!"

Her current owners say that Kona is still just as sweet and loving. She has spent periods of time in boarding and the owner of that facility reports that Kona is a typically energetic chocolate Lab, although not hyper. She has a moderate ball drive, so while she enjoys playing with the ball, this should not be a primary form of exercise. She is food-motivated, which will be helpful in training work, which Kona will enjoy, as she will work for attention and rewards of treats or affection. Kona still pulls on the lead and will need some work in this area as a part of learning that her people are leaders. Since Kona has now been through a few changes in her life, structure, routine and a relationship with her people built through simple training exercises and consistent leadership will be important. As a very social girl, Kona will need a home where she will not be alone for long periods. Kona will be fine with children 8 or older, as she has not had much recent exposure to children and still has a youthful exuberance. We have no information about Kona's feelings regarding cats. Another dog in the family would be fine, but not a necessity. Kona is crate and house-trained, up to date on her vaccinations, microchipped and in good health. We currently have Kona in a foster home and they have another Lab. Kona is located in San Francisco.

If you would like to learn more about this lovely girl, please call or text GGLRR Lab Rescue Rep Kathleen at (415) 706-5868.

(Please keep in mind we are all volunteers, most of us work full time and we all have personal lives. I do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient and I will be back in touch with you. When the dogs are in foster homes then it may take longer as we need to touch base with the fosters for updates on the dogs. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week and we do not have a facility that we keep the dogs housed in. They are scattered all over the Bay Area.)
