My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

11-1-08 Arlo has come SO far in his recovery. As you can see by the new pictures his leg is healed now and no more bandages or medical care are required. He is gaining confidence and learning more commands every day. His foster family is working with a trainer to help alleviate his separation anxiety. A new family would have to be home as much as possible, or be willing to take Arlo with them and to continue meeting his needs for training and exercise. He is the swetest, most affectionate boy and would return your investment of love. He is shy with other dogs so he'd be best as an only-dog in his new home.

7/11/08 About time for an update on this sweet boy! Arlo had his last stitches out last week and has reached another milestone in his recovery. He no longer requires a splint and extensive bandages, but has to wear the e-collar a little longer to keep him away from the wounds. He is putting weight on that leg - about 1 out of every 3 steps. We can't say enough about the care he received from Veterinary Referral Services in Scarborough and Southern Maine Veterinary Care in Lyman. He is one lucky pup!
If we haven't said it before, he is a GREAT dog. He doesn't like to be contained but we are working on the separation issues. He hardly ever barks, and does not lick or jump on people. With a gentle leader, he walks like an angel on a leash and is playful, affectionate and fun. Through all of his ordeal he has never tried to hurt anyone, even when cleaning out his painful wounds or forcing him to be still for his care. He would make a great family dog!

This sweet boy has been through it all! He was hit by a car three weeks ago and sustained significant damage to his left front leg. He is handling his rehab like a trooper but his vet bills have surpassed $4,000.00. You can't put a price on his health or happiness, we know, so we have been getting the best care for him that we can. He goes every two days for wound care and dressing changes, and is now getting back to his old feisty personality. He is not allowed to run, jump or climb stairs for a few more weeks so keeping him still is no easy task. When he is fully healed he will make a great family pet!

5-26-08
Sadly Arlo was hit by a truck last Sunday morning in Kennebunk. He sustained extensive damage to his front leg and paw losing a great deal of soft tissue. Arlo is expected to make a full recovery in 2 to 3 months but spent 5 days in intensive care, required many medications, dressing changes and anesthesia. As you can imagine Arlo's vet care totals well over $4,000 and we still waiting to find out if surgery will be necessary. The person who hit Arlo only stopped briefly and did not get out of his truck to see if he was ok. We are grateful to Arlo's neighbor for rushing him to emergency care and to his foster mom for so patiently dealing with his medical needs. Any donations can be made to the rescue and sent to 132 Goose Rocks Road, Kennebunkport.

4/24/08 Arlo's foster family says, "he continues to make great progress. He is attending obedience class and is doing very well with most other dogs. He is very attached to the humans at our house. His one vice is not liking to be contained. He goes everywhere with us and LOVES the car. He's playing with toys, loves to run on the 50-foot lead, and is now taking walks on the street like a true gentleman."

4/8/08 Arlo's foster mom says, "We thought it was about time for an update on Arlo the sweet boy!He is with us in foster in Southern Maine. He has come SOOOO far in a week and a half, and we couldn't love him more. He is affectionate and wonderful and so badly wants to please. He is 95% housetrained - only goes in the house if he is scared, like with lots of noise from the teenagers or the vacuum. He is more tentative with men but respectful with them. He sleeps with us, and is tolerating going in the crate when we are out. He is learning to play with a ball - before this he would throw it further away but would not bring it back and now he returns it to us and drops it. He has not been friendly with other male dogs so far but we are going to give obedience class a try. My friend's baby came over and Arlo was wonderful - totally gentle and sweet. He loves people of all ages and is almost turning into a couch potato and thinks he is a 60-lb. lap dog! He loves to run and play but loves to nap also! We can take walks with a leash now and is learning. "

He needs a family who can give him a chance to run and who will work with him on his training while loving him for who he is. Being an only dog in your house might be the right thing for him. Why don't you come and meet this big love?

3/30/08 Check out new pics and an update from Arlo's foster family below.

"A friend thinks Arlo may be an English Pointer, possibly pure-bred. The vet thinks he's more like 4 years old, and he is just beautiful. Look at his coloring - what a handsome guy - he would do great on a farm or somewhere where he could run like crazy. He is working on learning manners and basic commands. He is strong and bouncy (maybe Tigger would have been the right name!) and as affectionate as can be. He is a little more shy with men, and has come so far in just a couple of days! He pulls on the leash but is learning, and he LOVES toys of all kinds - we use a 50-foot lead in the back yard and he loves to run with us out there!"

3/28/08 Arlo is here! He is strong and beautiful and definitely needs some training. He is affectionate and funny. He definitely wants to be the alpha male with other dogs so he keeps us all on our toes. He loves to run so a fenced back yard or lots of running time on a lead will be needed. He's a big love, that's for sure!

3/15/08 This happy goofy guy narrowly escaped being shot by a cruel citizen - his crime, you ask? Being a stray dog in a rural Georgia county seeking shelter and a little food. Since being rescued from this dangerous situation, Arlo has charmed his foster parents into knowing what a great dog he is. He's a large pointer and a real love! He needs a nice fenced yard and a family to love him. Arlo is 2 years old, up-to-date on all medical care and ready to come to your loving permanent home. He and many other dogs were in a great situation at a sanctuary in Georgia where they could have love and safety but the owner has lost her home insurance and her ability to keep the dogs. There are many more like him in need of homes but we could only commit to the best of the best to come north because of the space in our foster homes. Could you help us out by keeping Arlo temporarily for foster or adopting him into your life? He will reward you with love and companionship. Arlo is SO handsome, gets along great with other dogs, and loves older children (about age 8 and up?) because he's just big and goofy and might knock a younger child down.
