My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Update 10/23/14: Opal's surgery on 10/8 went very well and she is recovering nicely. She had a dental, mammary tumor removal and spay all at the same time. She no longer has any teeth, but that doesn't stop her from eating softened kibble. Her mammary tumors were biopsied and we received the great news that all 6 were benign. We are so happy for Opal. She has come through all this and aside from trying to lick her sutures, has been a model patient. Her progress has been nothing less than astounding given how ill she was when she came to us. Opal will have her sutures removed on 10/28 and after that will be ready for her forever home. Opal is a true Velcro dog who loves to be with her person as much as possible. If you are attentive to her needs, she can be considered housetrained. We would like a home where someone is available much of the day.

Update 09/26/14: On September 10, Opal was officially cleared for surgery having recovered from her pneumonia. The x-ray that was taken two weeks earlier showed no infection or lung congestion. She was to remain on her antibiotics for two more weeks and seen again. Happily, we got the "all-clear" from the internist, so Opal was determined to be ready to have her dental, spay and mammary tumor removal surgeries. We were cautioned to wait at least another 2 weeks before proceeding. Opal had begun eating and drinking on her own and she has had such an appetite, she gained 2.5 pounds since she first came into rescue. Opal is currently with another foster home who will help her through her surgeries and aftercare. Her first and possibly only procedure is scheduled for October 8. The vet thinks Opal's dental shouldn't be too difficult, although she will lose all her teeth and he wants to tackle the spay and tumor removal at the same time. Look for more updates on Opal. She is currently doing well and acts like a very happy little girl.

Update 08/07/14: Opal's breathing is improving as we get the pneumonia under control. A repeat x-ray on 8/4 and reviewed with an internal medicine specialist. Since her diagnosis, Opal has been on antibiotics, fluids, has had to be force-fed because she wasn't eating on her own and getting steam treatments 2-3 times a day. This has helped considerably but the x-ray showed that Opal still has significant mucus in her right lung. The x-ray indicated no metastasis of the mammary cancer as yet, so as soon as Opal is cleared of her pneumonia, we can schedule her surgeries (spay, dental and mammary removal). Opal is as sweet as can be. She has finally begun eating on her own, however I am still giving her sub-q fluids until I can confirm she is regularly drinking on her own. Please continue your support for this little girl. As a breeder dog with no good vetting, she has spent the first 8 years of her life only knowing neglect. Despite that, she is affectionate and seeks out her foster mom to give kisses and get rubs. We want to do the best for this little girl who deserves a much happier life going forward. Opal will not be available for adoption until we have completed all her vetting.

Initial Bio 7/26/14 : My name is Opal and I am a sweet gem of a girl. I am about 9 years old, weigh 10 pounds and have spent my first weekend out of the shelter at the Emergency Hospital because I have pneumonia. As if that weren't bad enough, I have teeth that need to come out and mammary tumors which will need to be removed too. Foster mom says surgery will need to wait until my lungs are clear. Please watch for updates on me. I've got a long road of recovery ahead of me!
