My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Our tiny, eight pound Rudy is a gentle, glorious soul, who needs a warm lap and loving adopter to snuggle with. He was recently surrendered by his owners to the animal control shelter because Mr. Stork was bringing a new baby. It's a familiar story! Rudy is just the kind of cute cuddle bug that plays understudy until the real baby shows up. We were not surprised to learn, from a recent survey of top urban shelters, that Mr. Stork is one of the top three reasons that owners give up on their dogs.

Sweet Rudy was about to be placed on the Euthanasia list, after receiving good behavior reviews, because he contracted an upper respiratory infection and could not be placed in the adoption ward. We took him immediately and administered the brief antibiotic course necessary to his recovery. He has snapped back beautifully and has captured everyone's heart.

Rudy is a movie star mix of fluffball tiny breeds, but seems to be primarily Maltese, as reported by his owner. He also favors the Coton du Tulear, and seems to have the corresponding plucky, confident temperament. His coat seemed grown out from a rough shave job when he arrived, and we have had him groomed twice. His coat has a slight wave to it and he seems to be low shedding. He will require a couple of professional grooming each year, and he seems to enjoy the process.

Rudy is an extremely friendly scamp, once he has been given time to approach on his own terms. He may take exception to the occasional stranger who pushes their affections on him before he is ready. Rudy would be a great companion to an active single or couple, who have a lot of time for him. He becomes very bonded to his people and loves to be close by. He could also join a busy family with older kids who can be patient at first, as Rudy warms up.

Rudy enjoys canine company, and is an equitable housemate. He shares his foster Dad's lap with a cantankerous Chihuahua, Tank, who would try the patience of Mahatma Ghandi. Rudy is one eloquent negotiator.

Rudy could easily join a multi-dog home, but has not done as well with cats. He tends to bark initially, with disbelief, but can be encouraged to settle down for the long haul. Proper introduction and training could foster peaceful feline relations, but adopters should have the patience and persistence to weather the initial storm.

Four years old, Rudy is a bit behind the curve in his obedience work. Obviously he has been spoiled like the little baby that he was impersonating, so adopters would be wise to follow a basic obedience course to keep him in balance, and in touch with his glorious canine roots. Rudy is very eager to please and responsive to training techniques.

Rudy has great house manners and is housetrained and crate trained. Adopters should expect to troubleshoot the occasional accident as Rudy transitions to a new routine. He has been neutered, and has been vaccinated for rabies and DHLPP (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo and parainfluenza). He has had the 4snap test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been microchipped and dewormed.
