Bo-NEGLECT CASE:('s Story...
Yesterday was another one of those days when all you can do is shake your head and wonder why some people get dogs when they aren't going to provide even basic minimal care for them...we got a call from our friends at one of the local animal control facilities we deal with regularly about 2 severely matted shih tzus who were dumped down the street from the pound and were in need of an emergency grooming. They were so severely matted they had trouble walking, could barely see, and they reeked of mold and filth. The black and white older female one had a HUGE mass protruding through the mats. We rushed them right to our vets at the Animal Clinic of Morris Plains where everyone who saw them was shocked at their horrible condition. There is no excuse for this kind of neglect, and we are seeing more and more of it as more people buy "non-shed" pups without thinking ahead that they will have to provide regular grooming.
Sadly, the mass on the female we named Buttons was a HUGE invasive aggressive-looking mammary tumor which went deep into her abdomen and actually seems to be affecting her ability to pee, and she had multiple other large mammary tumors under the mats on almost every gland. We had to make the decision to end her suffering rather than try to put her through multiple huge surgeries which still wouldn't be able to remove all the cancer or buy her much time. Another completely preventable death had her owners been responsible and spayed her when she was younger- dogs spayed before their first heat cycle have almost no chance of developing mammary cancer.
The prognosis was much better for her friend/son? Bo, who is about 3-4 years old. He seems to be in good shape other than the horrible mats, and they immediately started getting the bulk of his mats off to make him more comfortable, and finished shaving his feet where the most dense and painful matting was today under anesthesia. Stay tuned for updates and after photos on little Bo...he will be ready for adoption soon and will be looking for someone who will make sure he never suffers again!

Why Adoption is a Great Option

Bo-NEGLECT CASE:(, a Oak Ridge Shih Tzu dog was adopted! Here's how you can benefit by looking at adoption as an option to buying a Shih Tzu for sale in Oak Ridge, or seeking a Shih Tzu dog from a breeder in Oak Ridge.

  1. Rescues and shelter volunteers in Oak Ridge already know the personality and tendencies of their pets. This means they can match you with the right pet. That will makes it much easier transition to owning a pet for yourself and your new pet.
  2. On average adoption fees are much less than you'd pay a Oak Ridge breeder, or pet store. Plus most often rescue pets have already been to the veterinarian for a check-up, had a round of vaccinations, and are spayed or neutered. That is a lot of savings!
  3. You will become a hero, and give a needy dog or cat a loving home. In fact, there are even Shih Tzu breeders who help with Shih Tzu rescue. One puppy or kitten adopted in Oak Ridge paves the way for another one to be saved.
