My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Cletus is a 1 year old 40 lb male Shepherd Mix. He is by far the happiest dog we've ever fostered, and there have been about 40 of them. He is always happy to see you, wants to be near you, play, and get pet. The nice thing is he settles down and will lay next to you on the floor as well. Cletus is a great looking male just waiting for a permanent home to call his own. He was a stray in Indiana and was held at a shelter, fortunately we were able to get him out of the Indiana shelter life and began fostering him on August 18th. What we can tell you after a few short days is that Cletus is a lovable dog and has a big heart. Just look at those pictures of this guy.

His first couple of days were about as good as could be expected. Cletus has adjusted well in the few days we've had him. He explored the house his first day and has settled in nicely ever since. He also has a great personality and temperament. Over the last couple of days Cletus has started playing with a rope, balls and nylabone. Cletus has already learned the routine where first thing in the morning we get up, go outside and go to the bathroom, then come inside and eat breakfast. We are teaching him some manners and have him sit before we feed him. We have a Shepherd mix of our own and Cletus has had no issues either eating, playing or just being around him. So whether Cletus will be your only dog or will be an additional pet I'm sure he will do great in either situation.

Cletus is young and doesn't know any commands and we would recommend training classes for him. Since he has learned sit while waiting for his food in just one day I'm sure he would be receptive to learning other commands. We have been on a few walks with Cletus and he did well on a leash. Cletus slept in his crate the first night and wasn't a big fan of it. He did bark and whine for a bit but eventually settled down. He did get bored in his crate and chewed the blanket a bit. The second night was much better. Cletus did bark and whine but only for a few minutes. Cletus appears to be potty trained as well, but as with all new dogs we keep an eye on him and make sure he learns to go outside. Cletus has held it all night without a problem in his crate and during the day while we are gone and will just have to learn the routine at your house. Basically all Cletus wants is to be loved, played with and pet. He really enjoys a good belly rub.

I would say Cletus has a medium to high level of energy since he's only 1 year old and would do great in just about any type of home but certainly needs to be walked and/or played with since he is young. He certainly enjoys the outdoors and roaming around our backyard. Cletus gets excited to meet you at first and we are working on him not jumping up on you. This handsome guy deserves a forever home and would make a great addition to your family. For more information contact Mark or Karla at 630-937-4039 or e-mail us at msr1015@yahoo.com.
