My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

In a perfect world, little Mimi would still be living quietly, growing old with the people who owned her for most of her life. She would have been enjoying her golden years, offering the calm, unconditional love that only a senior dog can give. She would never have been found wandering the streets – filthy, sick, nearly blind and deaf, unable to chew food – and taken to the local shelter.

But this isn’t a perfect world. We don’t know what happened, but Mimi, a toy poodle, wound up in a cage at the shelter instead of in a soft bed in her own home. A worker with Friends of Rescue spotted her at the shelter and saw past the filth and disease. Another volunteer agreed to foster Mimi in her home, giving Mimi a chance to recover her health, and Friends of Rescue promised to support Mimi for as long as it took.

And now, almost four months later, after lots of love, veterinary treatment, medications and good food, plus some much needed grooming – all gifts from the generous, supportive community that surrounds Friends of Rescue – Mimi is healthy, happy, pretty, affectionate, and alive to the joy in her world. Her skin is healthy again, her fur soft and fluffy; her mouth and ears are clean. She has been given a second chance at living the life a senior dog should have.

Mimi weighs about 11 pounds, but we don’t know how old she is. Estimates have ranged from eight to fourteen years. She has certainly entered that time of life when she loves to sleep in her little fleece bed a good bit of the day, especially when the sun shines onto her bed. She can see well enough to know when she’s encountering people and her dog housemates – she stops, looks up, and wags that little poodle tail. She eats eagerly most days, although sometimes she does take a break and sleeps through breakfast. She loves peanut butter, soft homemade treats, and being brushed. She will sit still forever, as long as you will brush her or gently massage and scratch her.

Her personality is simply as peaceful and calm as a little dog can be. She wants to be where everyone else is – people, dogs, and cats – even if she’s just sitting in her little warm bed, listening and watching. She often gets up and walks up to her people to ask for affection, wagging her tail. She’s as quiet as a little mouse, except when she thinks she’s been abandoned or can’t figure out where she is – then she sings! We think maybe she was housed with a beagle or hound – her little Mimi song is like a tiny hound’s sweet bugle!

Mimi has been given this gift of a second chance to age gracefully, and she is making the most of it. Now she’s healthy and ready to be adopted permanently. If you are looking to adopt a small, sweet, happy little senior poodle who apparently still has a good bit of time to share with people, please consider Mimi. She has so much more love to give, so many more faces to lick sweetly, so many more peanut butter treats to eat!

Mimi’s foster parents, along with Friends of Rescue, will be happy to tell you everything about Mimi. She s fostered in Huntsville, Alabama. She is up to date on vaccinations and is spayed. Please contact us at info@forRescue.net if you’d like to ask about Mimi. She is the perfect little companion for your quiet home.
