Dash is an exuberant, playful, Husky mix who is about six months old. Dash is another stray picked up by animal control, brought to AMR, and never claimed. Do you see a pattern? Dogs are disposable to far too many people. Too many dogs ... not enough GOOD HOMES. Anyone can “own” a dog but unfortunately not everyone should!

Pounds are full, rescues are bursting at the seams, and people are still buying from pet shops, internet sites, and backyard breeders. In addition, dogs are not being spayed and neutered so they go on to reproduce unwanted litters. Thousands of healthy, adoptable dogs are killed every year. Killed is the correct word in this case. Euthanasia is when a guardian makes the painful but caring decision to end their beloved dog’s life peacefully and humanely when the time has come. Animatch keeps all adoptable dogs until we find them a home; however, if we don’t have room, we cannot accept more dogs. Unfortunately, many animal control facilities have limited space and when they are over capacity, they must cut the numbers. That is where Animatch and other local rescues enter the picture; we try to help with the overflow. However, this is just a band aid solution. Unfortunately at some point Animatch and others are also chock-a-block. There is simply no space and therefore many dogs are being refused.... happy, healthy, well-adjusted dogs who will become victims of overcrowding.

There are many reasons that dogs end up in pounds, shelters, and rescues. None of them usually involve the dog. It is always a change in the owner’s life – new baby, moving, divorce, etc. Many of these people should have never got a dog in the first place. The result is supply far outweighs demand. If you can provide a good home to a dog and are ready to make the 10 to 15-year commitment, please consider adoption. If Animatch does not have the dog for you, do think about taking a look at Refuge AMR, 47 Rue Saint-Pierre, Saint-Constant, or other rescues on www.petfinder.com

In the meantime, Dash waits patiently for his home – one where there is someone home a good part of the day
