My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Please contact Cassie Johnson, CassDup@gmail.com about Pepper. Hello! I am reaching out hoping to save my sweet boy Pepper, a 15 pound Australian Terrier. We are in quite a dilemma. My husband and I adopted this guy 2 years ago, and he is now 11 years old. He became family very fast. I never wanted to think about having to rehome him, but my husband is in the Navy, currently on deployment and I am staying in my parents home in Summerville, SC for the duration of it. A couple months after he gets back we will be moving to Hawaii, and having a new baby. Unfortunately can't afford to foot the bill to do everything necessary to get Pepper to Hawaii with us. I also feel that traveling all over the country and outside of the continental U.S. is not fair for Pepper either. We had everything set up for Pepper to stay with my mother-in-law, for the duration of the deployment (because I can't keep him where I have to stay now) and while we were going to Hawaii. The hurdle now is only 2 weeks after she began keeping him we found out he has diabetes. She can't administer the shots anymore, but I am extremely thankful for her trying and being so diligent for the 2 weeks that she did. He fights her (I'm pretty sure it's because he can sense how nervous she is about it, and in turn it makes him terrified).. He is great with me and the vet techs at the vet clinic we go to. The needle is so small he barely feels it, but he has been conditioned to be scared of it with my mother-in-law. I need to find him a new place with someone who's familiar with administering insulin or is willing to learn and is patient because this is new for him too! I can't bring myself to turn him into any old shelter for fear they would have to unnecessarily euthanize him when his condition is manageable and he should have quite a few years left! It is my responsibility to do everything I can to make sure I try my hardest to get him put in a great place. And it has been so challenging trying to find somewhere or someone who will take him given his newly diagnosed condition. I am willing to travel for him anywhere throughout the state or neighboring states. I am more than willing to pay any necessary transport fees as well. Pepper is up-to-date on shots, is neutered, on Trifexis, had all the suggested vetting done after his diabetes diagnosis (I've paid upwards of $800 on all his vet care just in the last month, so he will be good other than his occasional glucose spot checks for quite a while), and he is taking 5.5 units of vetsulin twice daily, 12 hours apart. We now feed him a set amount of the W/D food twice a day about 15 minutes prior to his shots. If I can provide any more pertinent information about him please let me know. Pepper is a great dog, he's old so he prefers to spend most of his day just lounging around, but he does love walks outside when it's not too hot. He should be in a home without small children or cats. He generally gets along well with other dogs, but isn't too fond of young, hyper dogs. He can "play dead," "speak," and "sit." If you were somehow able to open up your home to Pepper, or if you were even able to point me in the right direction, our family will be forever grateful and I am certain you would aid in saving his life. Thanks for your time and I'm praying for your consideration. - Please contact Cassie Johnson, cassdup@gmail.com for more information or to adopt or foster Pepper.
