My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

We would like to explain that if you are looking for a perfect dog, they are rarely found in rescue. Our dogs often have unknown histories and we do our very best to evaluate each dog with kids, cats, and other dogs as well as determine how they behave in a home. It is important to understand that we have some specific criteria for each dog based on their backgrounds and input from their foster families. The purpose of these criteria is to better match each dog with an appropriate family. While a certain dog might appeal to you based on breed, size, gender or appearance, you may not match the listed criteria. Please understand that we are not trying to make adoption difficult—we are trying to make each adoption successful for the dog and the new family.

If you have children, we suggest that prior to applying for a dog, you view the website http://www.livingwithkidsanddogs.com. The information is excellent and can help you determine which dog would be right for your family.
Smokie is a beautiful 14 pound long-haired dachshund with a beautiful black coat with tan points and silver dappling. He was just six on August 8, 2014 and he originally came from a dachshund breeder. His family structure changed recently so Smokie now needs a forever home where he will be treasured for life. He is a happy little fellow who recently discovered the dog toy box!!! He pretty much empties it and hauls the toys to his chair and lays down very contented. The elk antler is a new favorite for chewing. Smokie is a smart little fellow who quickly learned to climb the little steps to get up on foster mom's bed and cuddle in for a good sleep. Like all hounds, he enjoys going outside to explore the big yard and woods where there are all kinds of new smells for his little hound nose to sniff. Because he is a hound he will require a fenced yard so a scent doesn’t lead him astray. Smokie is dependably house trained, doesn’t need to be kenneled when left alone, and he gets along well with the other dogs in his foster home. In fact he is beginningt to play with them. He is good with older respectful children and also cats. This little guy doesn’t have any problems at all—except he needs his forever home!!!! Smokie is with Happy Hound Rescue, a 501c3 all volunteer rescue. His adoption fee of $350 is to cover his vet costs. She is now spayed, current on all vaccines, is heartworm negative and on prevention for heartworms and fleas/ticks, and has a HomeAgain microchip.
