My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Murphy: 8-yr-old, 70-lb, neutered black lab

My name is Munchie, but my new fosters like to call me Murphy. (I guess they think I look Irish because I’m so handsome.)

I was given up by my owner who did not have time for me anymore in her new life in Oakland.

And even though I’m up for adoption, it doesn’t mean she didn’t love me, or that I’m not a really good boy!

So now I’m 8, and on my own, and life is a bit different. I’m figuring out my new life, and so may feel a little unsure of myself from time to time. Kind of like a career change? Ha ha. So, when you first meet me I may seem a little distant, but if you let me know you’re here for me, you’ll have my heart forever. Just ask my new foster mom and dad!

So what am I like, you ask? Well, my favorite activities right now are eating and chasing the tennis ball. Anytime anywhere. Which means it’s really easy for you because you can just stand in one place, throw the ball, and I’ll tire myself out, then we can go back inside and take naps together. Eating…well, who doesn’t love a big bowl of dog food?! I’m pretty self-reliant too. I can put myself to bed at night. When you take off my “work” collar, I know it’s time for bed, and I’ll crawl into my pup tent (literally), and then… zzzzzzz… see you in the morning.

As for other dogs, my new fosters have an 11-year-old boy lab, and we get along OK, we sniff each other and wag our tails a lot. We are still getting to know each other, but he seems pretty cool.

Some things you might like about me:

-I sit/ lie down/ heel on command

-I’m a great fetcher

-I’m good at coming back to you when you call me off leash

-I do not jump on people or furniture

-I’m housebroken!

-I enjoy quiet time in my crate, and am good at relaxing after some playtime

-I don’t chew on your nice things

I could use your help with, er, well, uh, I kind of like taking food from the counters – doh!

What Murphy’s foster says: Murphy [dog formerly known as Munchie] is initially a little bit shy and aloof. But you can tell he really, really wants to belong. He’s a handsome elegant boy, (may have a touch of hound in him as he is leaner than a traditional lab), and in good physical shape. He would excel at agility, as he’s extremely attentive (always looking for eye contact and body language), as well as very fit/athletic. But if agility is not your thing, he is also a fun companion/ house dog. Equipped with a good lab brain, and well-motivated by food, he’s quick to learn and respond to mild corrections. He drops to lie down faster than any dog I’ve seen! Emotionally I think he will need a little time to build relationships. The first few hours with me, he was constantly looking for his previous foster. Waiting by the door and sniffing the drive way for his car. But now he’s usually got his head in my lap and is looking for a connection. While he gets along OK with other dogs, I think he would really love to be some human’s best friend. For that special someone, he’s the kind of dog who will be deeply loyal till his last day.

What his GGLRR rep says: Murphy is house-trained and crate-trained, in great health, up to date on vaccinations, heartworm negative, and microchipped.

If you are interested in Murphy, call Rescue Rep Dave 415-686-4248.

(Please keep in mind we are all volunteers, most of us work full time and we all have personal lives. I do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient and I will be back in touch with you. When the dogs are in foster homes then it may take longer as we need to touch base with the fosters for updates on the dogs. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week and we do not have a facility that we keep the dogs housed in. They are scattered all over the Bay Area.)
