My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This is Tyrion and he is a 1yr old Rottweiler who is a complete darling and will steal your heart. Tyrion was seized by the Humane Society as part of a cruelty investigation. He was living his life solely inside a crate and was covered in filth and hadn’t been given the chance to grow properly. When Tyrion was found he weighed 20lbs as a year old Rottie!! He had been starved and his growth had been stunted from neglect. He is now 50lbs and gaining but will always be a small sized Rottweiler. He looks like a 6mth old puppy and will always have a puppyish look about him….which makes him completely endearing! Tyrion’s ligaments were never given the chance to strengthen so his feet were completely flat like ducks feet when we got him and he walked kinda funny. He has had a full once over at the vet and we were assured that he is not in pain, that his ligaments will strengthen now that he’s on good food and has plenty of outdoor space to run and play, and that even though he will always be small, he will be just fine! That was music to our ears. We are very thankful that the shelter staff realized that Tyrion needed to be in a rescue so that he could get more exercise and attention than could be provided at the shelter and he could start living a great life in a loving home. Tyrion has made huge progress and we are constantly amazed at how adaptive and quick learning he is. Tyrion is the happiest dog even though he had such cruelty done to him. He is a constant reminder to us that dogs live in the present and don’t focus on their past. Tyrion is loved and well cared for now so in return he is happy, fun loving, and affectionate and always has a joyful smile on his puppyish face.

Tyrion was named after a character from the TV show Game of Thrones. Anyone familiar with this character will understand the relevance of this name. Although short in stature, TV Tyrion does not let this hinder him, instead he works harder and is more determined to continue on and be a survivor and is smart and crafty and is always up for a good time. Our Tyrion has overcome his past and working on a happier future. Tyrion has learned some basic obedience in our care and knows “sit” and “down” and walks well on a leash. He needs further training and a family willing to take him to obedience school, not only for the training, but for the socialization and experience. Because he lived a life devoid of stimulation or activity Tyrion LOVES experiencing new things and is up for any adventure. We even took him to an event called Surf Dogs that the shelter was hosting and he loved every minute of it. There were dogs and people everywhere and a wave pool and wading pools to play in. Tyrion loves the water and was in it in no time. He even swam which had to be a first for him. He is great in the car and loves the idea of going somewhere new. We thought he may be shy of new places or noises but he doesn’t have a care in the world, he loves to see and smell new things and meet new dogs and people. We even had a terrible thunderstorm while he was in our care and it didn’t faze him at all. We are amazed at how easily Tyrion adapts to new situations.

He crated well even though a crate would be a negative thing for him. We have taught him that the crate is not a prison, merely a place to rest, and after the first day he learned that he doesn’t have to mess in his crate anymore and that he gets treats and toys for going in. He is crated whenever we leave the home and at night. He doesn’t make a sound in his crate and sleeps the night through. He has also learned to go the bathroom outside but needs to be let out regularly as he is still very puppyish in his manners and emotional level. Anyone considering Tyrion needs to understand that he was emotionally and developmentally delayed and so even though he is a year old, he acts very much like a puppy still and needs to be cared for as such. We don’t leave him unsupervised in the house so that he doesn’t have accidents or chew things. He loves to chew his toys now. He wouldn’t have had any chew toys before as he had huge tartar build up on his teeth form lack of anything to wear it off on. He now has a selection of chew toys and his tartar is going away. He is also very mouthy in that he likes to lick a lot and put everything in his mouth. We are teaching him not to mouth people and that a few licks is good enough. He is just very submissive and lets everyone he meets know that he is no threat by licking them. This is a behaviour seen in very young puppies. Tyrion would not have been given the life skills and socialization to develop past that. Most people don’t mind doggie licks so it’s not a big deal and is quite endearing, but if you have allergies to dog saliva or don’t like dog kisses at all then he is not the pup for you. He will grow out of the submissive licking with time, but he’s always going to be a kisser of some sort! He needs to be crated when not supervised as he can easily get into mischief if left alone. And like a puppy he needs to be socialized and trained and handled regularly. Dog socialization classes along with obedience school will suit him well. He is very food motivated so positive reinforcement type training will suit him best. Amazingly though, for a dog that was starved, he is not food possessive at all and you can handle him and his food bowl while he is eating and take toys and chew bones right out of his mouth.

Tyrion is being fostered with other dogs of all sizes and he loves all of them. He would love a home with another dog as long as that dog is good natured and playful and will be accepting of Tyrion’s puppyish behaviour. He would also be fine being the only dog as long as he had regular interactions with other dogs. He is also fostered with cats and is great with them and pretty much ignores them. He is not being fostered with children and although excellent natured we feel a home with kids under 10years old will not be suitable for him as he is a puppy in a big dog’s body. He would like a home with a fenced in back yard ideally. He is a moderate energy dog and tires out quickly as he was never exercised before and has no stamina. He loves to go for walks and we have taken him up to 5km without issue but he crashes after. He is not a dog that can run for any length of time though so will not be a suitable running partner for anyone with that desire. He would love daily walks but isn’t a dog that needs excessive exercise to be happy. What Tyrion needs most is a loving home and affection. He is a total charmer and everyone that meets him falls for him. His puppyish look and happy demeanor win everyone over. Tyrion needs people devoted to giving him the best life ever and to get him out exploring the world and who will train him well as he is such a smart dog. We were expecting a huge challenge when we took on Tyrion as we knew of his terrible past but he has amazed us with how quickly he embraced his new life as a house pet and much loved friend. It’s like he always wanted to be loved and now relishes in the love and care he receives. Tyrion will be a devoted friend and loyal partner to anyone lucky enough to adopt him. And really, who can resist a dog that forever will look like a puppy?

All Pound Dog Rescue dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested, de-wormed (if required), and microchipped prior to adoption.
