My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Do you want to drive Miss Daisy? She loves rides! And she is so beautiful. Daisy will be a special person who understands what rescue is all about and knows the rewards of it.

Daisy is a 3-year-old lab mix of 60 pounds and is a bundle of happiness, and sunshine. She currently lives in a foster home with a couple with three of their own GRFR rescues and has performed famously. And recently showed the ropes to a new foster dog, a released breeder, who was very scared, and Daisy was so gentle and caring with her.

Daisy has been forced into one bad situation after another starting as a young puppy and we have concluded that she was controlled by a shock collar and now has emotional baggage. Her biggest problem is being subjected to electronic devices close to her whether it be a microchip scanner or a kid's laser gun.

Her biggest issue is going to the vet clinic, which is not unusual, with so much of it being involved with electronic devices and in a constrained area. Fortunately our vet also comes to us and Daisy loves his mobile unit.

Daisy needs an adopter that understands her limitations and is in no hurry to have a calm, perfect dog. The adopter will have to "earn her trust". So many have let her down in her past. She definitely has the "bones" to be a fabulous forever pooch.

During her 6-month tenure with her foster parents, while working with a behaviorist, and being put on meds to calm her in uncomfortable situations, she has made major strides. She now loves to have children around, except young toddlers who seem to bother her with their antics. She does well in large groups and with lots of activity, and interacts well with other dogs on HER terms. Other than the dog park, her most intense encounter with a 6-month-old tiny Maltipoo. They ran joyfully together through our yard.

She can be a wonderful companion for: A family with dog-focused children, best ages 8 and above, or with a single owner or a couple who look at dog behavior in the same way. A household that has enough activity to keep her exercised and enriched, but won't be totally frenetic. She is looking for someone who understands that her issues will never be cured, but can be greatly improved with the continuation of her meds (an inexpensive pill twice a day, which she takes very nicely) and with good management and appropriate handling skills. It will never work to force her to do anything. She will not respond safely and reliably to anyone with a domineering personality or who believes she needs to submit to them. This will cause her to lash out at them as a warning.

She is food motivated and is easy to train with the philosophy of teaching her skills when not in the middle of a crisis. Practice and training should be done when she and the handler are calm. She should not be corrected with the triggers that upset her. Her trust will have to be earned, and that can go away quickly if she is not allowed to feel safe.

Daisy has finished a number of sessions with a behaviorist and GRFR will continue to provide the behaviorist's services to the adopter in her adjustment period with her forever parents.

Daisy has the affectionate, sweet, and people-oriented personality of a Golden, although she is a mixed breed. She has shown small interest in prey - squirrels, etc. She is very smart and learns quickly, often outsmarting her foster parents. She loves toys of all types and playing with balls.

Her most favorite activity is going for car rides and she wants to have the windows down a little to sniff outside. Daisy LOVES dog parks where she is probably the best dog park foster they have had. She greets all dogs and people appropriately and runs and runs with some of the sprightlier dogs. Daisy immediately learned recall and will respond and track with her people. She plays for hours with her foster brother who has taught her how to play nicely.

Daisy knows some basic commands, but needs work on jumping up gleefully on people. She has responded well to walking properly on a leash and has excellent recall when off leash. She is house-trained and can be trusted with free roam, although she does show her home staging skills by dragging out leashes, clothes, and shoes.

Daisy will always give you a daisy a day as long as she continues to be loved, exercised, and trained.

Note: Daisy and the behaviorist are located in the Castle Rock-Larkspur-Parker area, so it would be best to have an adopter in that area or someone willing to travel multiple times to that area.
