My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

09/09/14: Rocco Was Abandoned By His Family – And It Was For The Best

Rocco is an incredibly sweet senior boxer who was picked up by Animal Control as a stray and brought to the Shelter where they discovered that he had a micro-chip to locate his family. Sadly, when Rocco’s family was called they said they no longer wanted him which was just as well. Rocco tested positive for heartworm, had intestinal parasites, and was covered in fleas. Obviously Rocco was not given good care.

We were told that Rocco is 8 years old and lived with other larger dogs. The staff at the Shelter said he was a very sweet guy (super laid back) and was definitely dog friendly. They also tested him with small dogs and he was fine. When they tested him with cats he just sniffed them and then ignored. Although Rocco was out of our area we decided to take him into our Rescue program because the local boxer rescue did not commit to him.....Not surprising since he is older and heartworm positive.

Rocco has been staying in a temporary foster home while he recovers from his heartworm treatment which we scheduled as soon as he left the Shelter. He has also been neutered. Rocco had a hard time following the injections to kill the heartworms. The injections are given in the lumbar region and can be very painful. Even with pain medication Rocco was hurting. He was very sick for several days but has finally bounced back and is doing great.

Rocco’s foster home has two other dogs and several cats and foster kittens. Rocco is wonderful with them all.

Below is a report from Rocco’s foster mom:

“Everything went very smoothly with Rocco! He is a dream. He walks very well on a leash and just wants to stay beside you. He rides well in the car too; he just naps or looks out the window. He is also very calm. He's such a lover!

He has loved walking in the yard, laying under the trees and eating the pears that have fallen off the tree. He did fantastic with meet and greets with the cats and my dogs. He is a GREAT dog! I am so in love with this big boy!

I got out of bed at 5am today to feed my foster kitten; Rocco got up, went outside but never came into the den. When I went to look for him I found him curled up in bed. OMG he is so cute, funny and loving. He would rather lie in the bed and listen to country music (southern thing) while he waits for me to prepare his food. He loves being in the bed all day unless I am moving around.

Rocco is such a Velcro! New name? I move one 8th of an inch and he is right there. He is so attached to me! He is right next to me no matter what I do! He is awesome, loving, and wants to be right by your side or in your lap.

He is doing GREAT from the Heartworm treatments after those first hard few days. He is just laying around like he is supposed to so it is hard to get cute pics but he is a love bug, and cuddler. His patch of hair that was shaved for the treatment is growing back and starting to itch so we do a lot of butt scratching for him. He now feels so much better that he wants to play with my dogs but he can't and that makes him sad so he pouts. He is a wonderful loving dog! “
