My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hondo is a big sweet goofball with a heart as big as Texas. He gets along with his foster’s two dogs, has nice manners, and has not had any accidents in the house. We believe Hondo is about 10 years old but you would never know it from the amount of energy and enthusiasm for life he has. Hondo’s favorite things are spending time with his human, getting belly rubs, and playing in the yard. Hondo would love to be the only dog in the house so he could get all the attention, but he would also do well with another friendly stable dog.

Hondo was very overweight when he came to us, but after a month on a healthy diet with plenty of exercise, he has begun to lose weight. He is still sometimes a little unsteady on his feet, but that doesn’t keep him from running around and having fun; we expect the occasional unsteadiness to largely resolve as he continues to lose weight and gains strength. He is on a glucosamine supplement which seems to help. His coat was shaved down, but is starting to grow back, and should be a handsome red and cream color rough coat.

Hondo does bark for a minute or two after we put him to bed at night and after I leave for work in the morning, but he calms down quickly. Sometimes he paces as though he isn’t sure what to do so we are also teaching him to “settle”. He is learning pretty quickly that a tiny treat magically appears as soon as he lies down on his bed.

Because of his physical limitations with stairs, Hondo will do best in a ranch-style home without stairs and with carpeting to help his feet grip the floor. Hondo doesn’t like thunderstorms; he will need a safe place that he can escape to, and a mild sedative to help him relax. He is sometimes hesitant to go outside when it is dark, and would like a porch light to help him see where he is going.

Hondo is a wonderful great-hearted dog who would love a quiet stable home to call his own.
