My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

My name is Toby, and I’m a survivor. When I was just a year old, I suffered a herniated disc in my back. Surgery corrected the issue, but I herniated another disc this past April that left me paralyzed. My mom and dad helped me get surgery that completely restored my mobility. I’m not sure why all this happened to me, but I kept hearing the doctor tell my mom that dogs with long backs are prone to back problems. If you ask me, I think I look very handsome. My back doesn’t seem too long at all!

Even with all of the hardships I have sustained, I’m one of the most loving beagles you’ll ever meet. I’m the perfect couch potato, and love nothing more than to snuggle up and lay my head on someone’s lap. I give great kisses as well. When I’m not napping or snuggling with my people, I enjoy short walks around the neighborhood. On my last walk, my mom was talking with someone who lived down the street. I tried to go into their house, but my foster mom just started laughing. They had kids inside and it seemed so fun. I absolutely love kids, especially little ones! It reminds me of my old home where I had a 16 month old human sister.

I’m very smart and have no problem letting people know what I need. I stand by the door when I have to go outside, remind my foster parents that it is suppertime if they haven’t fed me already, and snuggle up when I want attention. After 9 years, I’ve gotten pretty darn good at this whole communication thing.

I’d do best in a house or apartment with a lot of carpet and few stairs. I must admit, I walk a little funny ever since my back problems began. Because my feet can be unsteady, I have trouble on slippery floors. But when I come across a great smell or my cute neighbor dog Rosie, I am suddenly a young man again. It is like something comes over me and I am fast as can be!

Oh, one other thing I should tell you about myself. I really, REALLY love antler bones. I know my foster parents don’t want me digging in the yard, so I make sure to use my nose to hide them under the mulch. Every time I go back to check on them, they are still there. I must be really good at hiding things!

My foster mom says that everyone who meets me falls in love with me instantly. She tells me that there is “just something so special about me”. I don’t mean to brag, but I think so too. I would love to meet you sometime to see if you feel the same way!
