My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

LOCATION - PORTLAND-METRO AREA, OR
Ryker is a new arrival to our rescue as of late summer 2014. He was pulled out of Haven Humane Society of Anderson, CA and is believed to be a Belgian Shepherd mix. He is about 50 lbs and approximately 2 years old. Although he was gauged by the shelter to be about 4, his teeth are exquisitely clean and in great shape, plus he has plenty of energy left!

Ryker learns very quickly with positive reinforcement and likes to be a good dog, so set this boy up for success and he will do his best to meet expectations. He is both food and 'ball' driven, and has an amazing focus for working with a toy, which usually translates to a good dog for dog sports or even bigger tasks like Search and Rescue.

He is good with people and other dogs, though a home with a female dog may be best or a male disinterested in being overly dominant. He also loves children, as evidenced at all our adoption events, so we think he'd make a great family dog. He has been tested with cats of October 2014, and while he currently lives with one in his foster home, it's not advised he go to a home with a cat as he really likes to herd them. He apparently never has heard the adage about 'herding cats' being impossible!

Ryker is a very intelligent and 'busy' dog. His current foster works from home, and he is happy to lay on the couch behind her most of the day, but without regular breaks to go play outside with the other dogs and at least one walk a day, he becomes obsessive about bringing you the ball or herding the cat. He will need a home that understands how to best exercise both his body and his brain. Otherwise he will pace and can get himself into trouble in making up games. This is pretty typical for the breed though!

Ryker has been left home alone in the home with no problems, and while he has had some issues with housebreaking when first introduced to a new environment, it corrected within the first week. He has also proven to be reliable off leash on hiking trails, although he may need a gentle leader or halti for regular walks as he really wants to play with other dogs he sees and this manifests in vocalizing and barking if he's on a flat collar.
