My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Tito: 7yr old, 85-lb, neutered black lab

Wow! I didn’t see that coming. My human pack leader (whom I’ve been with for six wonderful years) just went off to college and left me with his human parents – who are caring, but very busy traveling all the time. I hardly ever see them. Dad and the son are sad to say goodbye to me, but they realized that they could not provide me the life that I deserve. I applaud them for their bravery and the many wonderful years together. But now it is time for a change.

So, hi, my name is Tito. I am house-broken and crate-trained. Up to date on shots and in pretty spanking good health, if I say so myself. I understand basic commands, like “sit”, “stay”, and “down”. I pull a little on leash but you would too if you didn’t get many walks. I have no food or toy aggression issues. I am not a barker either. Lab rescue guy said I was a bit overweight – yeah, I am carrying around an extra ten or so pounds. But that’s the boring stuff.

What you need to know is that I love to chase a rope toy and play with my humans. Jump on people? Yeah, I do that. I’ve also been told that I dig occasionally (who me?) and have jumped a fence in my day – hey, it needed to be jumped. How do you spell “fun”: T-I-T-O! What I need from you? Take me walking, of course. Lots! Throw the toy! Take me to meet other dogs! Let me chase squirrels – I will go bonkers over them. Water? Swimming? Dunno, let’s give it a shot.

Hey, take a chance on me Tito. You will be happy you did.

What Tito’s foster says: Overall he's a well behaved and affectionate dog who is easy to live with. He's housebroken, and uses one spot in the yard. Not aggressive in any way, you can wrestle with him, pet him while he's eating -- no problem. He has been staying alone in our garage/yard during the day with no problems, no barking, no destruction. Very glad to see me when I get home; he practically jumps out of his skin. His agility is impressive for a dog his age. He walks at heel with only a flat collar given a firm hand on the leash. Motivated by treats, he responds to sit, down and stay with alacrity. On the leash he responds to "leave it" pretty well. Only bit of bad behavior is mounting...may be driven by attention-seeking/insecurity, and it seems to be waning. One odd thing, he has very little interest in retrieving balls, but will play with his rope toy. He'll play tug o'war and he will retrieve the rope toy more so than tennis balls. He doesn't care for our pool but we are working on that. He's a bit out of shape, on the daily walks he's slow and his tongue is hanging out on the home stretch – but we are getting him back into tip-top shape through exercise and walks. Tito's passion is walking. Particularly when I take him up in the hills and let him off leash, he goes nuts chasing squirrels and smelling everything. He probably travels twice the distance that I do.

What Tito’s GGLRR Rescue Rep says: A great, healthy dog. Would thrive best in an active family – with kids. Tito needs a family that will be present in his life and committed to an active regimen of walks, exercise, dog socialization, and human contact. Warning: Tito will quickly win your heart.

(Please keep in mind we are all volunteers, most of us work full time and we all have personal lives. I do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient and I will be back in touch with you. When the dogs are in foster homes then it may take longer as we need to touch base with the fosters for updates on the dogs. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week and we do not have a facility that we keep the dogs housed in. They are scattered all over the Bay Area.)
