My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Posey: 2 Year-Old Chocolate Male Labrador, Neutered 58 Pounds

Hi! My name’s Posey. I love to play and am very energetic! My family simply did not have enough time to spend with me and made the hard, but responsible decision to find me a forever home through Lab Rescue. I think I was too active for them, and they didn’t realize how much exercise and work would be required to take care of me.

I was purchased, as a puppy, from a breeder. I went to a 3-week obedience training class at Cali K9 Solutions in San Jose and did really well, but my family didn’t have the time to reinforce what I’d learned so I definitely could use some brushing up with training and would thrive in a home where someone would work with me. I know sit, down, and stay. I’m sure I would catch on to a lot very quickly with a refresher course. I am starved for attention, eager to learn, very smart, and food motivated---what a great combination for training!!! I am afraid of a lot of things, including men, but my foster mom and dad are helping me to work through that and also helping me to not be so sensitive to my surroundings. I do pull a bit, on walks, but respond well with a little correction. While the lady from Lab Rescue was walking me, when I heard, “heel” and felt a tug on my collar, that sounded and felt pretty familiar to me and I responded. When she praised me and maintained eye contact with me, that was familiar, too!

I am crate trained and do sleep in a crate at night. I spent most of my days in the backyard of my last home, and if it was too hot, my owner would bring me in the house where I was usually crated. My family had a swimming pool, but since I was never exposed to swimming, I just drank from it. My family would come out to play fetch with me, on occasion, but what I really loved was for someone to spend time with me.

I have boundless energy. I was so excited when the Lab Rescue rep came to visit me, I kept on jumping up on the table because she brought treats and it was hard for me not to jump up on the table. Only when she gave me a treat did I drop my tennis ball from my mouth, the rest of our visit, I carried it in my mouth because I like to play so much. She tried to play fetch with me, and although I would go retrieve the ball, I was happier carrying it my mouth the entire time while she checked me out.

What Posey’s Foster Says:

Over the last several weeks Posey has become a more focused and calm dog. When he first arrived he panted and paced all day long. Now he settles and is starting to engage with me to learn basic obedience. He is so smart! He will need someone who can continue this journey with him, making him into the great dog I know he can be! He's a great running partner and loves playing with my other 3 dogs. He knows how to focus and sit and go to his crate for nap time.

What Lab Rescue Says:

Posey’s been in a foster home since mid July, 2014, and his foster mom and dad have been incredibly patient with him. He has 3 canine brothers, and Posey is the most energetic of them all and can wrestle, tirelessly. Initially, he wouldn’t stop pacing throughout the foster’s home, but with time, he’s made progress towards settling a bit more. He will now settle in his crate and is able to lie down while chewing a bone. However, he is still very much a dog on the go! He is fearful and anxious, overall, but more so around men. He is not aggressive but scared of many things.

Posey’s family did travel a fair amount, so Posey had been boarded quite a bit. We spoke with the boarding facility and the owner did say Posey was one of their most frequent visitors. He was exercised there by running freely and playing fetch on the property, as well as going on walks. This facility did not socialize, but did walk dogs together, up to three at a time. The owner described Posey as happy and starved for attention.

Posey appears to be a very anxious and sweet dog that requires a lot of time, attention, love and training. He attempts to counter surf. Because of his excitement and tendency to jump up, we wouldn’t want him to knock a small child over, so a home with older kids is best.

Posey will need a special person with a lot of solid dog experience, one who is willing to commit to working with him and to help boost his confidence. He will require an active family, one who can give him the exercise he needs every single day! We want a home where someone is home most of the day to provide the time, training, structure, guidance, and leadership that a young dog needs.

Posey is a dog that requires a lot of exercise and mental stimulation (playing fetch—focusing and retrieving the ball, maybe some agility training) He is doing well in his present foster home, where he is frequently walked, ran, and has plenty of play time with his canine brothers. He will require at least one 30 minute-1.5 hour run, or two long walks a day to wear him out, plus lots of playtime and activity to exercise his mind. Posey loves wrestling with his foster brothers. It would be great for him to always have a dog friend to play with. Posey will also need to be a dog that is welcomed into the home, to be made a part of the family and included in all of their activities.

Posey is current on all shots, is neutered, micro chipped, and heartworm negative.

If you have the time, patience and experience to train a very energetic and sensitive young Lab, and are active, yourself, please contact Kris @ 415.652.6091. If you get her voicemail, please leave your email address, as well as a contact phone number.

(Please keep in mind we are all volunteers, most of us work full time and we all have personal lives. I do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient and I will be back in touch with you. When the dogs are in foster homes then it may take longer as we need to touch base with the fosters for updates on the dogs. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week and we do not have a facility that we keep the dogs housed in. They are scattered all over the Bay Area.)
