My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Sparky: 2 Year-Old Yellow Labrador Neutered Male 75 Pounds Special Needs

This is 2 year-old Sparky---affectionately nicknamed Stump by his foster mom. Sparky was born with some congenital deformities; he has a missing left foot, a malformed right foot, and a shortened tail – NONE of which stop him from leading a normal life!

Sparky originally came from a breeder and because of his deformities, the breeder left him at the local shelter; he was adopted by a couple who gave him up after the wife had a complicated pregnancy and could no longer spend time with him. This is where his wonderful foster stepped in to rescue him-- She saw Sparky listed on Craigslist for free. She, being in dog rescue herself, swooped him up right away as she didn’t want him ending up with just anyone. The funny part is his foster mom does Pug rescue, so Sparky is presently being fostered with 10 Pugs and an occasional French Bulldog that visits regularly. There is also a chicken coop in the yard, and Sparky is perfectly content around them.

Sparky is fine when left alone and is presently left for about 6 hours/day with access to both the house and yard. He does pull on walks, but a Gentle Leader harness or head collar should fix that. He loves car rides, will jump right in and hang his head out the window. Sparky is wonderful around kids and other dogs.

What Sparky’s Foster Says:

Sparky is a love. He is quiet, seldom barks, and loves all people and dogs!

What Lab Rescue Says:

Sparky is an adorable, affectionate, and sweet young boy. Upon first meeting, he is still puppy like and will mouth your hand, but will stop with a stern, “No” As mentioned previously, he is living among 10 other Pugs and when Lab Rescue went to meet him, there was Sparky, in a roomful of Pugs and remarkably, he maneuvered himself so gingerly around all of them, he never stepped on one.

Sparky knows sit and down and takes treats with a gentle mouth. He is calm, sweet, gentle, mellow, and is not a barker.

He does pull on walks, but we used a soft slip collar which helped considerably. We took him on an hour long easy hike and he did great! He stopped to greet every person and every dog along the way; he is truly sweet! His disability does not slow him, so it’s easy to forget that he even has one. You will need to exercise caution and know that steep hills can be difficult for him.

Sparky is healthy, neutered, up to date on vaccinations, micro chipped, and is heartworm negative.

Sparky is located in Santa Cruz!

If you are interested in this sweet boy and can provide a loving home, please contact Kris #415.652.6091. Please leave a contact phone number and email address.

(Please keep in mind we are all volunteers, most of us work full time and we all have personal lives. I do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient and I will be back in touch with you. When the dogs are in foster homes then it may take longer as we need to touch base with the fosters for updates on the dogs. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week and we do not have a facility that we keep the dogs housed in. They are scattered all over the Bay Area.)
