My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

HARLEY is a 2 year old neutered black male Lab who weighs 61 pounds. Harley is a really nice dog and loves to play and cuddle. He’s a great retriever of tennis balls and frisbees, brings them back and drops them, and will sit for the next throw. He’s obviously had some training - he knows sit, come, and we’re working on leave it. Now that he’s been here a few days, he’s unwinding from the kennel and so he is more relaxed inside and seems to know when to lay down and be quiet while I’m busy. He crates exceptionally well, he sleeps in his crate all night and has several short periods of rest in his crate during the day. Left to his own devices, he can get into the trash can, and is prone to counter surfing, so the house is now cleaned up and puppy proofed. He enjoys carrying his toys or human socks around the house - he almost always has to have something in his mouth. We exercise a lot during the day, a one-mile walk, and lots of retrieving in the backyard. He would benefit from a little more obedience training to learn not to jump. Harley is a typical youngster, lots of energy with lots of loving to give. He is very good at washing your face. He loves his food and needs consistent training with figuring out which foods are his and his humans. Because he loves food training should be fun! Harley is a young enthusiastic pup who loves people and playing with them. He is looking for a home that will give him the attention, training and exercise he needs and deserves. He thinks getting petted is really neat. If you're sitting on the ground, he will crawl into your lap and give you kisses in return for scratching his ears and butt. Harley only has 1/3 of a tail. He was adopted a few months ago and got Happy Tail, owner did not treat it, so it got infected. Owner returned him to Animal Control saying he had been given a sick dog. Animal Control vets treated his tail but had to amputate part of it due to damage. He is approved for adult household only

Update (12/22): Harley went to try out for a job with the police.

Update (11/30): Harley is good with other dogs and enjoys meeting all people. He will jump up to say hello when he greets them. He has moderate energy, and did well with a twice daily mile long walk. He is more easily walked with the gentle leader. He likes all toys. He is a countersurfer so put everything out of reach and secure your trash can. He is crate trained and if you offer him a treat, he will go running into his crate. He also knows sit, down, come, and shake. He will play fetch forever, he retrieves beautifully and he will drop the ball at your feet. He loves to run in the yard. Be careful around the door as he loves to explore. He settled nicely in the house and would take morning and afternoon naps. If he gets some exercise, he’s happy and quite laid back for a young guy

Update (11/20): Harley has enjoyed his foster home and accommodates our crazy schedule splitting our time between DC and Thurmont, MD. Now that’s he’s used to a home environment again, he settles nicely in the house after some moderate exercise. He enjoys playing with all kinds of toys, peanut butter stuffed kongs are also a favorite of his. He is thoroughly crate trained and happily goes in his crate when he gets a treat to bring inside. He loves to sleep in his foster mom’s bed every once in a while and has discovered the sofa is the perfect place for his naps. After a trek outside followed by breakfast, he loves to cuddle with foster mom while she has her coffee As you can see from the pictures, he thoroughly enjoys sitting on, if not as close as he can get, to his humans. For a young dog, he has a great temperament in the house, he has short periods where he wants to play and will let you know by dropping a ball in your lap. Once satisfied with some attention, he settles in for a nap or chew time with one of his knucklebones or rawhide. He will retrieve balls relentlessly, and even in the cold weather jumps in our small pond afterwards, so he’d definitely love to live near some water! Harley does well on walks with a gentle leader and adjusted to it almost right away. He wants to greet other dog walkers in the neighborhood and after a greeting will sit patiently while I chat before we continue our walk. He can easily handle my 3 mile walk when I’m up to it, so he would make a great exercise buddy. He automatically sits for his food without being asked and responds well to other basic commands like down, come, stay, and shake - but will need consistent reinforcement. Harley will make a great companion dog as he continues to grow out of his puppy-hood.

Update (11/15): Harley is doing very well. Now that he’s into a routine, his personality is really starting to shine. He loves to play and thinks all humans are here to play with him. He prefers using a gentle leader type collar to the easy walk harness and he does beautifully with it- we went for a long walk in the woods and he stayed right by my side. He’s been more relaxed in the house now and takes lots of short naps once he’s had some playtime or a walk. Out here in Thurmont we are near some farms, so Harley had a chance to see lambs, cows, and horses - he barked at all of them and wanted to chase them, so I don’t think living on a farm with animals is in his future. He’s totally compliant with getting in his crate and also when I put gates up to keep him in certain rooms. He’d be a terrific companion to someone who has a big yard and will give him exercise and a little training. In addition to sit, stay, come, shake and down, I think he knows roll over, because he did it twice for me - I must’ve shown a hand gesture that he recognized.

Update (11/13): Harley is doing great, he graduated last night from sleeping in the crate, to sleeping on the sofa - and slept 10 hours without moving. He loves playing in the backyard and is mellowing more in the house now that he’s used to the routine. After some exercise he lounges around and enjoys napping in rooms where sunlight streams in. We’re working on walking with a loose leash using an easy walk harness, and using lots of treats in the process. He loves, loves, loves to retrieve his favorite ball and is learning to catch balls in mid-air. He’s very fun and keeps us laughing. We do, however, need to keep him away from any paper products, as he loves to chew/eat kleenex, napkins, and paper towels!

Update (11/04): Harley loves to play and cuddle with his humans. He enjoys running around the fenced backyard and relaxing with his foster, usually in her lap when he can get away with it. He’s a great retriever of tennis balls and frisbees, brings them back and drops them, and will sit for the next throw. He’s obviously had some training - he knows sit, stay, come, shake, and we’re working on ‘leave it’. He crates exceptionally well, he sleeps in his crate all night and has several short periods of rest in his crate during the day. Left to his own devices, he can get into the trash can, and is prone to counter surfing, so cleared kitchen counters are a must until he undergoes a little more training; he will have a training addendum. He enjoys carrying his toys or human socks around the house - he almost always has to have something in his mouth. We exercise a lot during the day, a one-mile walk, and a few good rounds of play in the backyard. Harley loves affection and is a sucker for a good butt scratch and will melt into a belly rub position.
