Oreo's Story...
Hi Peeps! My name is Oreo and I am a silly little hound puppy. I was soo sick at the animal shelter that if it weren't for the angels at Canine CellMates, I know I would not have made it out alive. Now I am on the mend (thanks to my super duper handler, Nathan who has looked after and taken care of me since I left the shelter) and living in the Fulton County Jail with Heidi, Tony, and Bentley. We are being trained for the Canine Good Citizen Test. When I'm not in training I am playing with my toys...and my favorite is tug-of-war. When I grow up I am going to be the sweetest, most trained, pooch to graduate from Canine CellMates! Just you wait!! Oreo is part of the Canine CellMates program at Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, GA that pairs inmates up with urgent dogs from the Fulton County Animal Shelter. Dogs must pass a temperament test and then go through an 8 week training course to receive their Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certification. The Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program, established in 1989, is an American Kennel Club program to promote responsible dog ownership and to encourage the training of well-mannered dogs. The evaluation consists of ten objectives. All items must be completed satisfactorily or the team fails. Test items include: Accepting a friendly stranger. Sitting politely for petting. Allowing basic grooming procedures. Walking on a loose lead. Walking through a crowd. Sitting and lying down on command and staying in place. Coming when called. Reacting appropriately to another dog. Reacting appropriately to distractions. Calmly enduring supervised separation from the owner. At graduation – he will be ready to go home with his forever home . Fill out an adoption application because he is one awesome, deserving pup! Contact Canine CellMates at Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, GA for more information or email adopt@caninecellmates.org.

Why Adoption is a Great Option

Oreo, a Atlanta Bluetick Coonhound/Pointer dog was adopted! Here's how you can benefit by looking at adoption as an option to buying a Bluetick Coonhound/Pointer for sale in Atlanta, or seeking a Bluetick Coonhound/Pointer dog from a breeder in Atlanta.

  1. Rescues and shelter volunteers in Atlanta already know the personality and tendencies of their pets. This means they can match you with the right pet. That will makes it much easier transition to owning a pet for yourself and your new pet.
  2. On average adoption fees are much less than you'd pay a Atlanta breeder, or pet store. Plus most often rescue pets have already been to the veterinarian for a check-up, had a round of vaccinations, and are spayed or neutered. That is a lot of savings!
  3. You will become a hero, and give a needy dog or cat a loving home. In fact, there are even Bluetick Coonhound/Pointer breeders who help with Bluetick Coonhound/Pointer rescue. One puppy or kitten adopted in Atlanta paves the way for another one to be saved.
