My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Our Petey ain't nothin' but a hound dog! Actually, he is a double dose of scent hound. Its easy to see the characteristic Bassett Hound elongated spine, and paddle feet, but, Petey surely has some Red Tick Coonhound, or Beagle in him to explain his leggy look, and blond spotted markings. He is a large dog, weighing almost 60 pounds. This dog has quite the beautiful and elegant silouette. He is suprisingly quick as he keeps pace with his active, young handler. Petey skeedaddles at a very brisk pace, and yet is so easy to handle.

Just two years old, Petey came to us recently from the ASPCA, where he had been surrendered by owners during a divorce. He did not adapt well to shelter life, after losing his cushy home, so our contacts asked that we take Petey into foster care for R and R. We quickly found that the key to Petey is reconnecting him to his scent hound roots. Often dogs bred with specific instincts, like scent hounds, can become anxious if they become under-exercised and bored.

Petey would be a fantastic companion to the active single, couple, or family, who enjoy the outdoors. Petey loves nature, and can walk for hours, with his nose to the ground, savoring whatever the trail offers. Petey also has a quiet side that seems to tap his Bassett roots. He loves a leasurely afternoon nap, and makes a delightful companion on those rainy, couch potato days. Our Petey is a fantastic companion dog, who craves human contact. The more attention he gets, the better he likes it!

Petey revels in human contact and attention, so he could join an active family with kids. He has the ideal family dog temperament, as he doesn't play favorites, and will give everyone an equal dose of Petey love! He seems to enjoy other medium to low energy dogs, and would love a multi-dog home. We have not had him around cats, but he would probably be fine with proper introduction to dog savvy felines.

Petey has good housemanners, and is housetrained and crate trained, although Adopters must allow for the occasional accident as Petey transitions to a new routine. It seems that Petey's former owners neglected his obedience training, but Petey has proven himself to be a quick study, and has already grasped the basics. Petey knows all his commands and is one of our obedience superstars. He loves his training, and is extremely eager to please.

Petey is in excellent health and has been neutered. He has been vaccinated for rabies and DHLPP (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo and parainfluenza). He has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been microchipped and dewormed.
