My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Nathaniel:: 5-6 yr old male Seal Point Tonkinese

COURTESY POST: Purebreds Plus Cat Rescue is helping facilitate the adoption of this cat. We take no responsibility for the health and medical records of this cat. It is the responsibility of the owner and adopter to discuss this.

It is hard not to love the Tonkinese boys; they are such wonderful lovers.Nathaniel is such a good cat. He is patient, big hearted , affectionate, easy to work with - and drop dead gorgeous, of course. He is so longing for love. We held him for his photo shoot and he said said no don't put me down just go on holding me. He was on the Needs Rescue List in the shelter because he needed a dental- his two lower canines were broken and needed removal. I said sure I would take him and would they please get him ready for me.

Part of getting ready was to “combo test “ him. That test tests for both Feline Leukemia and Feline Aids. He tested negative for the Leukemia but positive for the Feline Aids. Leukemia is a bad illness but the Feline Aids in cats is not so bad. We now have learned that 4 % of the cat population in this country has this virus and most are never diagnosed and their owners never know. I wouldn’t want him to have this of course but I know the great majority of cats with it live long heathy lives. Kidney and heart disease, for example, are much more serious. Some shelters no longer test for FIV because it is so common and they know it is still mistakenly discriminated against by many. I have fostered and adopted many FIV+ cats and have had no trouble finding them homes. Most of the homes are multi cat homes since many people feel these cats do not even need to be only cats.

If you are interested in Nathaniel I suggest you go online and read the new research about this virus. The understanding of FIV is changing as new studies are done but there is still disagreement and you will need to decide for yourself what you think. FIV+ kitties need to be inside only and fed a healthy diet and have good vet care as they go thru life. Their immune system may not be as strong at times as a normal cat’s so they need to be well cared for. The shelter called me with the news."Of course I will take him" I said.

What I didn’t realize was quite what a wonderful cat I was getting. It has been a pleasure to get to know him. We took care of his teeth right away because I worried that they hurt him and we loved him up and what a happy beautiful boy he showed himself to be.He wants to bond very deeply with his human. That is what Tonkinese do.

He is Mr Mellow; he is entirely cool and goodnatured. He seems fine with other cats. Someone will have a wonderful companion.

He eats wet and dry and is litterbox perfect.

His foster mom is Harriet in Santa Cruz.
