My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Our pretty boy, Alexander, is a timid soul, who longs to connect to his special person, but is slow to trust. He was found along with his running buddy, Graham, outside a heavily populated urban housing project foraging for food. The unlikely duo, possibly brothers, were snatched up by Animal Control, and brought to the city shelter, where an uncertain fate awaited them.

Alexander is the shyer of the two dogs, and hangs back while Graham soaks up the human TLC. Our mission has been to build Alexander's confidence so that he sees the world as a joyous place, rather than a threatening one. Contact with other dogs, seems to help Alexander break the ice with people. His submissive nature makes him a good candidate to join a multi-dog home, with one or two well trained Alpha dogs, or cats, to coach Alexander in family pack dynamics.

Alexander also needs a confident owner who can provide the leadership necessary to help him feel safe and secure. He would not be the best choice for active families, but would thrive in the experienced hands of an active single or couple, prepared to give the exercise, discipline and training that he needs. We have started him on the basics of the Canine Good Citizenship, as recommended by the AKC, and he has shown great potential.

Alexander is a medium sized dog, weighing 35 pounds. He appears to be a variation of Beagle known as Blue Tick. His coat is predominantly black, with a tuxedo-patterned chest and socks that sport the "blue tick" markings. Alexander's slight physique is taller than Beagle breed standard, and perhaps suggests a bit of Coonhound DNA.

Alexander has the true scent hound instincts that keep his nose to the ground on walks. He is very tuned into nature, and as we watch him engage his Beagle schnozz, he seems to connect to his roots, and that worried expression vanishes from his face. Exercise and obedience work will go a long way to spark Alexander's shy spirit.

Alexander has excellent house manners and is house trained and crate trained, but adopters should have reasonable expectations of a recently neutered male dog, and should be prepared to troubleshoot the occasional accident which may occur during Alexander's transition to a new routine.

Alexander is in excellent health, and has been spayed. He has been vaccinated for rabies and DHLPP (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo and parainfluenza). He has had the 4dx test, and is negative for heartworm, lyme, earlichia and anaplasmosis. He has been microchipped and dewormed.
