My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

What is your name?
Hey guys! My name is Hazel!

How old are you?
I was rescued as a 5 month old puppy. I’m now around 6 months old.
My birthday is: 5/29/2014

What do you look like?
I am currently about 18 lbs and I’m told that I have beautiful hazel eyes (Huh…wonder if that’s where my name came from?). My coat is mostly white but I have liver markings on my face and tail. I get TONS of compliments on how pretty I am.

What do you like to eat?
My foster mom has me on a super yummy puppy food that has lots of good nutrients to make me big and strong. It tastes soooo good and I can’t wait for breakfast and dinner time each day!

What kind of personality do you have?
I am just starting to find my true personality. I was really sick for a while and slept a lot when I first got to my foster home, but now that I’m feeling better I have found that I LOVE to run around in the yard with my foster sister, Mavis. She’s a 3 year old English Setter and is the best playmate ever! I love to empty the toy bin and surround myself with all of the toys. All. Of. Them. I like them all; bones, squeakers, stuffed toys, tennis balls…you name it. I’ll play with it. When I’m not herding Mavis and her human child in the yard or chewing on my toys, I really just want to spend my time snuggling.

Describe your perfect day
My perfect day consists of a ton of petting, snuggles, running in the yard, playing with toys, napping and meeting new people (sometimes I even get to tag along with my foster mom when she goes to work and the petting, playing, meeting, snuggling is doubled!). I’m just learning about these leash things, but I’m smart and doing really well. I think I’m going to enjoy walks as soon as the weather is a bit warmer.

What is your favorite toy?
All. Of. Them. However, I seem to really enjoy the elk antler, tennis ball, and my squirrel squeaker toy.

Do you know any tricks?
I’m getting really good at “sit” and “stay”, but SOMETIMES I just get so excited that I wind up wiggling my way out of those positions. My foster family is beginning to teach me lie down on command and I’m always very good at going to the back door when I need to go potty. Mavis has been a big help in teaching me that. My foster mom always talks about how smart I am, so I’m confident that I’ll catch on to these other commands soon.

What scares you?
Sometimes, my foster mom gets this weird, loud, sucky thing out and she pushes it around on the carpet. She looks ridiculous but I’m sure she has a good reason for doing it. For now, I hang out in my warm, cozy bed until she’s finished. I’m going to continue studying this strange, noisy stick and I will report back with my findings. Also, I don’t like to go through doorways at first. I’m not really sure why, but once someone coaches me through once or twice, I’m good-to-go!

Do you like cats?
I have a foster sister-cat and I really like her! My foster mom says that I’m the first dog EVER that she’s let get close enough to kiss her! If I get a little too curious for her, she’s sure to let me know and I immediately give her the space she needs.

Do you have any doggie best friends?
My best bud is for sure Mavis. She has taken me in as her own pup and shown me how to live a healthy, happy life. I follow her lead on most everything. My favorite is when she lays down because I like to climb on top of her and snuggle in for a good nap. She even lets me hug her while I sleep. I also have frequent play dates with my Pug friend, Erin, and her Pit Bill sister, Even Chance alumni, Tilly. We play and play…then we nap on whatever human sits down the longest.

If you could be anywhere in the world, where would it be?
On a lap. Any lap will do.

How is your health?
I’m doing much better now. When I came to Even Chance, I was very sick with hookworms and I was malnourished. Now that I see my doctor on a regular basis and I’m on a healthy diet, I’m back to my ‘ol puppy self. I still have a little bit of recovering to do, but it won’t be long until I’m ready for my forever home!

How long have you lived in your foster home?
I moved into my foster home at the beginning of November.

Who do you live with in your foster home and who is your closest companion?
I share a home with my foster mom, her elementary school age daughter, a 3 year old English Setter (Mavis) and a 10 year old cat (Romey). I really do love everyone in my life, but if I have to choose my closest companion it would have to be Mavis. She’s just the best!

Where do you hang out when you are home alone?
My foster mom works during the daytime, so I hang out in my bed (aka kennel). She comes home most every day at lunch to let me out and sneak in a quick cuddle before going back. I’m really proud to say that I’ve never ever had an accident in my bed and I go in right away when asked! Sometimes, though, I will get to go play with Erin and Tilly for the day or go to work with Mom. Those days are the best!

Where do you sleep?
I sleep in my kennel at night, right next to my foster mom’s bed. I’m a great sleeper and don’t even wake up during the night! Sometimes Mavis gets up, so we go out for a quick Midnight potty break, but then I go right back to sleep. I love my kennel…I have a special blanket that I love to sleep on and I feel really safe and secure when I’m inside.

What do you love about your foster family?
My foster family is GREAT! They have introduced me to so many new things like other adults, kids, animals, situations, etc. They keep me entertained when I need to play, focused when I need to learn, and on a schedule so I know when to sleep/eat/potty/play. My foster mom says that I’m the most calm, perfect puppy she’s seen…she’s even been known to call me “perfect”. But most of all, I love them for saving me and my sister, Millie, from what could have been a horrible end before I was even given a chance to show how amazingly wonderful I can be!

What was life like before you were rescued by Even Chance and brought into the welcoming arms of your foster parents?
Even Chance rescued me from a local animal shelter where my litter mates and I were dropped off by a lady who didn’t want us. I don’t remember much before that though. I was sick with hookworms, not on a good diet, and lacked energy and life. Even Chance saw so much potential in me and couldn’t wait to scoop me up! I love my foster family so much, but I can’t wait to have a forever family (hopefully with another dog to cuddle with!) to settle down and live my life with!

Even Chance does not operate on a first come, first serve basis. In most cases we have already decided the type of home and owner we want for our dogs. These opinions are based on the temperament tests we perform prior to accepting the dog into our program and the behaviors the dogs display as they grow up. Our agency reserves the right to deny acceptance of any dog to an owner who we feel the lifestyle does not match that of the dog. We are in no way judging you or your lifestyle; we simply want to put our dogs in the best living situation possible. We take very seriously the decision we make when it comes to placing one of our dogs in a forever home. If I sound like the perfect pit bull for your and your family and you are interested in giving me a forever home, do not hesitate! Please fill out an application here and my foster family will contact you to schedule an in-person meet and greet. We look forward to meeting any and all interested applicants.
