Pepino is a wonderful, sweet little hypoallergenic Poodle mix “Lapdog” who can be adopted as an only dog, or with other dogs in the home. He is fine with all humans, men and women, and kids too. He just wants to hang out with you and sit with you and be by your side and cuddle. Pepino means “Cucumber” in Spanish. He has had this name even since the shelter (rescued from Baldwin Park Animal Shelter) and responds to it very well.

Pepino had Luxating Patellas which is very common in Poodles and other small toy breeds. This is where the kneecap slips in and out of place. We decided to surgically repair both knees to the tune of about $2,500.00. He still has the behavioral pattern to do that “skip to my lou” on one leg, the right, but the vet has assured me that the knees look good and they no longer slip in an out. His follow up x-rays look real good. Many dogs live with this condition forever but we decided to repair it so that he won’t get bad arthritis down the line, and so that the slippage won’t progress to a higher grade. So Pepino is good to go now after about six months of healing (we had to first repair the one leg, then, the other).

Pepino is a bit of a picky eater for just kibble alone, but I just sprinkle a small bit of Parmesan Cheese on top of his kibble. Pepino’s shelter paperwork states that he is about age four however my vet says he’s closer to age two (shelters typically get ages wrong).

Pepino walks pretty well on the leash. He gets along great in the pack of dogs; however, he really does not need the other dogs. He just wants to sit with the humans. So Pepino can be the only dog in the home, however, he must be an INDOOR dog. He can go outside to potty, or if he chooses to, but must have indoor access to be part of the family at will. He is not to be put outside. He can also be placed in a home with another dog, male or female, as long as that other dog does not get too upset if Pepino occasionally gets bossy (but NEVER aggressive). Pepino is just a dog that says, “Hey, get away, I’m sitting with this person now; I don’t want you here!” but if I correct him, he does stop so I have to remind him of his manners. He does very much like other dogs, but just gets possessive of the people at times. I do not know how he is with cats.

Pepino weighs about 10 or 11 lbs. Whoever adopts Pepino can relish in the joys that he does not shed and is most likely HYPOALLERGENIC, however, that person MUST understand that Pepino WILL need grooming at least every three months. This rescuer recommends that he be shaved down because his coat can become very much like a lamb and can become matted if he is left without grooming for too long.

Pepino is a GREAT dog. If you are someone who just wants a dog to hang out with you and sit with you and take occasional walks, then he may be the boy for you! Pepino is neutered, fully vaccinated and micro-chipped. He is crate-trained and sleeps in a small 36 inch long wire crate at night. He is potty-trained however potty reinforcement is always needed in any new environment.
