My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Charlie: 4-5-yr-old neutered male chocolate lab 81 lbs

Good grief, Charlie Brown! I was found as a stray dog on the streets of Fremont and brought into the city shelter where I was cared for until some nice folks got me transferred to Lab Rescue. I am now hanging around an awesome family who are putting me through my paces: walks and exercise, working me on commands, sleeping in a crate, keeping me from jumping and putting my front paws on stuff… all that “good dog stuff”. I respond to a few commands, but I need a strong pack leader to show me all the ropes. I walk pretty good on leash (with a correction collar), but could do better – practice, practice, practice. Hey, I am just absolutely thrilled that I am now in a safe home getting two square meals a day along with having a bed. Warning: I seem to have a tendency to run away – so I am considered a flight risk – you do not want to let me off-leash in an area where I can escape.

Charlie is currently with a dog trainer who is working with him to resolve his lingering poor dog-on-dog manners and his tendency to run away.

What Charlie’s foster-trainer says: Charlie (the Tank) is a big substantial boy. He will do well with a family that is active, consistent and demonstrates the leadership role with Charlie. Charlie does well on tie down and in the crate, but needs exercise and training/mental stimulation before confinement. He sleeps at night on tie down or in the crate and has been quiet and behaved. He is doing very well with training and knows all the basic obedience cues. He is proficient with sit, down, heel, stay, come. My philosophy is to food-reward all excellent obedience responses and leash/collar-correct poor behavior and distracted behavior.

Charlie has tested the abilities of my family and tried to jump on each but when corrected and shown leadership he quickly behaves. Charlie does have prey drive and enjoys chasing birds away and would like to catch one. I have been correcting his prey behavior when I notice it beginning.

Charlie has done well with all the dogs in my home large and small breeds. He is a pushy dog and needs boundaries immediately when he meets a new dog. He will go face to face and stand tall and I always correct this behavior. He quickly interacts appropriately with the dogs when the poor behavior is corrected.

Charlie can be a very fun dog to be with. He loves to fetch toys and you can run with him if that is your thing to do. He has lots of energy!! He is very affectionate and loves to be close to any person that will pet and love him.

What Charlie’s Rescue Rep says: Charlie is a great dog, but a strong demanding dog. He is neutered, micro-chipped, and current on all vaccinations. Charlie would be a fine dog for a family with older children. Not sure how he is with cats. Charlie will require a physically-strong and capable owner as Charlie is a Mk I Mod 0 tank who will take you for a rough ride if you are not able to control him. [Charlie recently hit a car while running away – the car did not hit him; he hit the car – he came up with a slight temporary limp and a few abrasions but was otherwise fine – you should see the car.] Charlie’s adopter will be required to have one to two lessons with Charlie’s trainer to ensure they can follow the appropriate protocols to continue Charlie’s rehabilitation. Charlie is a treasure but demands a strong hand.

Charlie is currently with a foster/trainer in Petaluma. If you are interested in Charlie, call Rescue Rep Dave 415-686-4248.

(Please keep in mind we are all volunteers, most of us work full time and we all have personal lives. I do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient and I will be back in touch with you. When the dogs are in foster homes then it may take longer as we need to touch base with the fosters for updates on the dogs. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week and we do not have a facility that we keep the dogs housed in. They are scattered all over the Bay Area.)
