My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Gracie
Shih Tzu
Age: 8 yrs; approx. DOB March 1, 2006
Weight: 18#
Adoption fee: $200

Gracie came to us when her owner could no longer keep her. Gracie spent her whole life with the same family and is sweet and well-trained. She'll bark if someone knocks on the door, but is otherwise quiet.

Gracie is sweet, affectionate and on the shy side. Until she came to BGSTR, she had never lived with other dogs. Although she will follow them to watch what they do, Gracie doesn't play with them or interact with them. She would be happy as an only dog if her owner was home a lot. She hasn't played with toys but there's a chance she might enjoy them. She loves to be near her people and will happily camp out beside your chair or have a bellyrub on the couch.

As a pup, Gracie was trained to use pee pads and continues to use them for elimination. She never went outside to potty or play, and she preferred being indoors. In foster, she's begun to follow the other dogs outside to see what they are doing, but she won't potty outside. She needs someone who doesn't mind picking up used pads and replacing them for her. Over time, you might be able to move a pee pad outside so she understands that she can potty outside as well.

Gracie isn't a jumper and likes to be lifted into bed to sleep with you. She sleeps through the night and wants to visit her pee pads as soon as you get up in the morning. She's also happy sleeping in her bed on the floor. She is accustomed to a couple of steps but not a flight of stairs. Gracie won't go up or down a flight of stairs and has always been carried.

Gracie is afraid of young children, but does fine with kids over age 10. She has never walked on a leash (not really necessary when she didn't go outside) and she doesn't mind being carried.

Grain-free foods are required for Gracie, as she has yeasty skin. Between a grain-free diet and a few baths with medicated shampoo, her skin will look and feel much better. Grains and sugars help produce yeast so we have eliminated these from her diet. She likes jerky and chew sticks on occasion. She'll have her teeth cleaned before she goes home.

Gracie is a sweet little friend who appreciates affection, treats, and being included in your life. She likes to ride in the car. She loves to hear her name and will respond immediately. She's also quite photogenic. Lots of Kodak moments with this little sweetie. As she experiences more in her foster home, updates are posted on our facebook page, so please visit her there as well!
