My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Update 02/10/15: Wilma has been enjoying life with a wonderful foster family in Westchester County, NY. Her foster dad is an advanced handler for ECAD, a service dog organization for those with physical disabilities. In his care, Wilma is learning to mind her manners. She is no longer mouthy and she walks beautifully on a leash. If she pulls, all he has to do is say "no pulling" and she stops. Wilma sleeps and stays in her crate when no one is home. She did well at a recent family gathering and Wilma loved all she met. Jeff tells us, "She took a trip with my wife and I to our country home. Like all the dogs we've brought up here, Wilma loves the low window sills so she can see the world and still be warm. She also loves the snow and and particularly the icicle I found and gave to her," as you can see in this video.

Foster dad, Jeff, reports that Wilma is a true love-bug. She has come a long way and is no longer running amok like a kid at Grandma's house.

Wilma's Story: Wilma is a beautiful Golden girl who is about 6 years old. She came into rescue in AL with a Labbie friend named Fred and they went to live together at a home in CT. Since going to their new home, it has become evident that Wilma and Fred do not need to stay together. Additionally, having two dogs was too much for their adopter to handle comfortably so Miss Personality is now looking for her forever home. Wilma has a special guardian angel who has taken her under her wing, Recently, she told us, "I am in big trouble! Yep - I've fallen in love with her too. You have no idea - she is an absolute love bug. Wags her tail the whole time she is in range of people. I brought her to the dog park we have here in my neighborhood for about an hour. She played with one of her stuffies - she loves them, had a Nylabone and lots of cuddles. I even took a video of her!"

Wilma adores her human friends and delights her caretakers. They are working with training her how to walk better on a leash, not to jump up, and not to be mouthy. In her past life, Wilma was never loved enough to be taught proper manners but who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks! Wilma is super smart and a quick learner. Her adopter will need to understand her puppy-like behavior in this adult dog and continue working with her on her manners.

Her ideal home would include a fenced yard where she could run and play and enjoy the outdoors. And Wilma would like a home where she can blossom as an only pet. Time on the streets as a stray has resulted in Wilma being selective about the dogs she keeps company with. In her past life, she may have been denied the opportunity to play and socialize with other dogs and does not always understand how to do so or how to greet other dogs. DVGRR has granted permission to share an article on their website to help folks understand “reactive dogs”. Thoughts From a Reactive Dog.

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

SGRR Adoption Fees (subject to change)**
Puppies under 6 months $650
Young dogs 6 months - 6 years $550
Young dogs - Special Needs $450
Senior dogs 7 - 9 years $450
Seniors dogs 10 years and older $350
Senior dogs - Special Needs $300
Young Bonded Pairs $850
Senior Bonded Pairs $750

**Please note: The fees listed represent a slight increase and are effective for applications received after June 1 2014. We regret the need to increase the fees for our dogs, but found it necessary due to the increased costs we are faced with for each dog's care and placement.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Please be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog and make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
