My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Max: 1 Year Old Chocolate Male Lab Neutered 65 Pounds

Lab Rescue got a call from the Fremont Animal control as there was a young lab at the emergency vet clinic that needed a rescue. The owner had taken him into the clinic as he was having some complications due to having ingested some plastic. (This was the second time this was happening in less than a year and the owner could not afford to have another stomach surgery.) Max had not eaten for around a week so the clinic felt it was an emergency that Max get to a vet to have his surgery. Everyone said Max was a wonderful dog and should not be put down so GGLRR agreed to take Max and pay for his needed surgery.

Max had to have several inches of his intestine removed as there was scar tissue from his last surgery that was blocking things going through his system. He has not fully recovered and we have Max in a foster home. (We spoke to the previous owners and they loved Max but could not afford the surgery and were not home enough to give him the care he needed.)

From the previous owners:

Max was purchased from a breeder in Paradise, CA at 10 weeks of age. He was in the home with another dog and the extended family had dogs and children. Max was wonderful with them all! The owners work full time so Max was in part of the backyard and the garage during the day and out of boredom he would chew on things. He chewed on the doggie door and ate some plastic which did not pass through his system; so they had to have the 1st surgery on him in February 2014. They have not had any issues with Max with any other animals of kids. The owner wanted to work with Max on hunting but they did not have the time. From the foster parents:

Max is a very active, high energy boy. He also thinks everything is a toy or food. When he first came to us he would jump up on people but we have worked on this and he only will jump up every once in a while, usually only when he gets very excited. He loves people and dogs and he does very well with cats. He is very respectful of them, although if they run he will want to chase them. He would love to chase cars, so he should not be off leash where there is traffic. (We would not recommend this with any of our dogs.) He does come when called! He also knows: sit, kennel and leave it. He does love the water and anything the sprays or puts out air. If he does grab something he is not supposed to have he will try to turn this into a game. If you grab his collar he will drop it. Sometimes a sharp no or a “ah ah” will work. The previous owner would use a Kong with him and this is what we would suggest for toys for Max, a Kong or Nyla bones. Max is a very sweet dog and everyone that meets him, falls in love with him. Max likes to go for car rides, play ball and of course loves to swim! He sleeps either in a crate next to the foster parents or on a dog bed next to the foster parents. The foster has another male lab that can be grumpy at times and Max will leave him alone. The foster also has horses and Max does not seem to notice them!

We would love Max to go to a home that is around most of the time, a home that can get Max the exercise and training he needs. We think Max needs to be in a home with older kids. Max can be in a home with cats and other dogs.

Lab Rescue did the surgery on Max, he has all his shots, he came to us neutered, he is heartworm negative, and we got him a microchipped. At times Max may need to take Pepcid for his stomach and he may need to eat a special food - ID.

Call to come and meet this wonderful boy. Max is located in Livermore.

If you have the time for this active sweet boy and want him to be a part of your family, please contact Liz at 415-613-6374 or email liz@jobshopsf.com.

(Please keep in mind we are all volunteers, most of us work full time and we all have personal lives. I do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient and I will be back in touch with you. When the dogs are in foster homes then it may take longer as we need to touch base with the fosters for updates on the dogs. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week and we do not have a facility that we keep the dogs housed in. They are scattered all over the Bay Area.)
